Fuzz on malaysian wood

Hi all,

New to freshwater tanks and have a question about my driftwood. I bought Malaysian wood at the LFS 1 week ago and rinsed and plunked into a 20G that is in the start of a fishless cycle. I noticed last night a soft, whitish fuzz on the wood in a patch.

Main questions:
1. If this is still there when I add fish can it hurt the fish?

2. Will this go away?

3.How can I try to get rid of it?

THANKS in advance for all replies!

How much light does it get, it might be a result of a bloom.

You may need to (do this carefully!) to either boil it or somehow pour very-hot water all over it; then submerge or wash in/with cold water. Let it cool and rinse/scrub any solid remains in/with tap water; then rinse in treated tap water and place it back in your tank.

Or you could let it be while you go through the fishless cycle, it might disappear once the tank fulfill the nitrogen cycle. It is not unusual to experience bacterial bloom, alge bloom, both or even a bacterial bloom that resembles algae bloom while going in fishless cycle.

Involuntarily, but neglectfully, I introduced ick to my Rainbowfish tank a few days ago through a piece of driftwood that allegedly came from a healthy source. Obviously it wasn't.

Thank you both so much for replying. I took the wood back to the lfs and exchanged for a new piece of malaysian wood. This time I am soaking it, will scrub some, boil 15 minutes and soak some more.

The other piece I bought is fine. The icky one had whitish spots on it when it was dry at the time of purchase, but I did not worry because I figured if it was bad the lfs would not be selling it (now I know better!).

THANK YOU!!
