| | Fish Bum | Patience is what it's all about! FINALY!!! We are cycled!!!
So we had a few casualties along the way. RIP, But after running the tank 7 weeks we have finaly cycled and our water stats are great. amonia 0, nitrate 10ppm, nitrate 0, pH 7.2. and our water is crystal clear. At times the tank practically looks like there is no water in it. Just wanted to share with you guys. Thanks for your help for my clueless self. I am ready to actually enjoy this hobby to the fullest.
BTW- could the addition of driftwood 3 weeks ago facilitated the cycle? (it was new, not from an established tank. My neighbor has a tank, and told me that she kept having her fish die on her and she addied a piece of wood,(im assuming she meant driftwood) and her fish stopped dying..... |

| | Moderator | Good job! It's a great feeling, isn't it?
(You meant 0 ammonia, 0 nitrItes and 10 nitrAtes, right? I sometimes capitilize the I and the A because I've made that typo often enough)
I'm sorry you lost fish along the way. I don't know about the driftwood, I'd never heard of it helping the cycle.
How about some pics? |

what are your stocking plans | Well, I was over stocked before when I had no idea what I was doing, lost few fish so I think im okay at this point. tank does look a little empty.
here are a list of my survivors- I might be overstocked STILL theoreticaly
4 danios,
3 gold gourami's,
1 pleco I know he cant tay b/c he will get to big, but we love him, and will raise him until he is too big- he is only about 5-6 inches right now.
3 red finned sharks- also small little guys
3 Tiger barbs
1 pnnaple (her sisters died)
1 flame dwarf gourami (her sisters died:;
believe it or not the tank looks empty- I am trying to resist getting more fish. Do you think maybe I can get at least another flame dwarf to keep the other company? Or maybe another pinapple or two?
I really am itching to get some fish- ABSOLUTELY NO PUN INTENDED Last edited by Freshwater Fan; November 5th, 2008 at 12:40 PM.

| | Moderator | I would let another week go by...then test and if still all cycled, maybe get a few so the bio load can catch up...I think 2 weeks are best to wait on a newly cycled tank to start shopping slowly...what are you looking at to stock with the rest? |

| | Fish Bum | I'm open for suggestions. I would like a little more variety in the tank. Adding a few more of the same fish would be just okay. But adding more fish of different variety would be better. Can you reccomend any species that would live harmoniously with the tanks current residients? I would like to get some smaller schooling fish, maybe like 7-8 of them to get the effect. Maybe some little neons? I don't think any of the residents are big enough to eat them..... I want to add color to the tank.
Thanks! |

| | Moderator | well if its for the 55 gal, id leave it be...the bioload is going to be over as they grow, but with good maintenance it can be done..even getting rid of the plec, leaves you overstocked....I know it doesnt look that way right now as they are babies, but as an example, I have a gold gourami thats 7 inches long right now..hes very very territorial and you have 3 ..your red tail sharks can get up to 6 inches and another very territorial fish....I think if you got a school of anything else, you would be doing water changes every other day like I have too LOL ...and its not fun at all! but thats just my opinion |

| | Fish Bum | Okkkaaaaaay (insert 5 year old hissy fit voice here) I guess I will leave the tank aolne and watch these fish grow. As it stands I do a 25% water change every4-5 days or so. I would love to see my gouramis grow. my red tail sharks don't seem to be growing that quickly- well, one is getting pretty big, but the other 2 are runts, How long are we talking about here for these fish to grow to these sizes? |

| | Moderator | LOL @ hissy fit...you so sound like me...I can only tell you how long ive had mine and that might help...
my gourami will be 3 in feb ...my sharks are about 1 year old but not quite the 6in more like 3-4.. ..my fish get bloodworms, brine shrimp, and omega one flakes for food twice a day...sundays they are fasted...my established tanks get a water change of about 50% every couple weeks unless I have an issue with parimeters..my overstocked 75 gets it every other day LOL (and I have no python its all with buckets grrrrr)
so to say how big they get and how long it takes, is different for everyone...I think you might have to even change out some of your babies the bigger they get as agression comes with age...but each fish is different so one can never know for sure...would love to see pics sometime!! |

| | Fish Bum | Thanks for the compliments. The pleco did not want to come out of his house. He was a little camera shy- I even tried to gently coach him out of his batcave but he pretty much told me to take a hike. I will catch him sooner or later though. |
