Peaceful/Semi-Aggressive/Aggressive

As a general rule, I know that you can keep all peaceful fish together in a community aquarium (with some exceptions). Is this the same for semi-aggressive and aggressive fish? Can you put a bunch of semi-aggressive fish together into a community since they will defend themselves? Just something I've been wondering.

As far as i knew, you can put them in together just as long as there is a group of them. If you had 1 agressive and 1 semi-agressive, i think that's when there would be trouble.

The more aggressive you get, the more it becomes a problem to mix them.

For example, I would classify dwarf puffers as semi-aggressive at the least, and African butterfly fish as semi-aggressive at the least, but chances are that one would kill the other. Either the butterfly would just suck the puffer up, or the puffer would chew the butterfly to death.

Not that aggressive mixes can't be done, but you've got to be more thorough in your research.

each fish is different and size of tank plays a HUGE impact as well...

Thanks for the replies guys! I know the question was vague so you couldn't give a bunch of detail...I was just wondering for the sake of curiosity...my aquarium I'm getting ready to stock is a peaceful community, and you all have me on the right track for it.
