I'm treating my Betta fish

with Rid Fungus for the white growth on the top of head. I took the filter out and left it floating in the tank so I don't kill off the beneficial bacteria. Is this OK to do?

Floating it in the treated tank could inhibit the growth of new bacteria, but it shouldn't kill it off.

To be on the safe side, you might want to put it in one of your established healthy tanks.

Good luck, I hope your betta feels better soon.

Lucy do you think I should just take the carbon out and place the filter back in or place it in an established tank? Which do you think I'm better off doing?

Also Thanks I hope she feels better soon too

When you're medicating a tank, you have to take the carbon out, otherwise it'll filter out your meds, it should say that in the instructions.

You shouldn't remove the whole filter.
If it were me, I might take the filter cartridge out and put it in an established tank and leave the filter sponge in place so as not to set off a mini cycle.

I can't do that since it's the kind of filter that's a cartridge. It's an all in one. I guess I will put a slit in the filter and dump out the carbon and put the cartridge back.
Thanks

I think that's what I would do, if I were you.

dina, when you say filter, do you mean the entire filter ot just the catridge and media that's inside?

Lucy it's an all in one cartridge It has the blue filter like stuff with the carbon inside all attached to this hard plastic backing. I cut open the blue filter and removed all the carbon. I also have the bio wheel which I don't touch.

Since the filter media not only collects good bacteria, it also collects all the gunk and debris that gets caught in the filter which is its intention. If I understand your post correct, you are floating this cartridge in the tank? Are you not now adding all that gunk back into your tank and making the water dirty by floating this cartridge in your tank?

capekate Yes I noticed that yesterday my water got all cloudy so I removed it and cut out the carbon and put it back in it's intended place. At least it will get the gunk out but not filter away all the medicine.

Thanks
