Lightning and fish tanks...

Strange question...

I know that lightning adds some stuff to soil and water - helps plants grow.

Quote from website: “Lightning can help produce a form of nitrogen that's useful for growing plants. Lightning can cause oxygen and nitrogen in Earth's atmosphere to combine -- to form nitrogen oxide -- the main nutrient in lawn fertilizers.”

Will lightning have an effect on my tanks? – make the plant grow better – make algae grow?

Lightning's huge energy is able to break the bonds in N2 in the atmosphere, freeing the Nitrogen to fixate to Oyxgen forming Nitrites which dissolve in water and are rained out into the soil. And as you know from your tank's nitrogen cycle, Nitrites-->Nitrates--->food for your plants.

As far as beneficial for your tank...not sure how you would get it to strike...not sure why you would want to..unless you like to eat fried fish!

I don't think it would unless you left your tank outside and let lightning strike them or nearby... which isn't what I'd do with my tanks personally. But who knows, maybe it would effect them.

yes, lights are good for plants. You need about 2 Watts per gal. Plants come with different light requirements low,med and high. look on the site there is some info on plants and lighting.

No I didn’t mean putting the tank outside and having lightning actually striking it... just wondered if it had any impact if there is lightning outside when it’s raining.
