Over stocked or not?

Hi guys

Quick one about tank mates... and tank size.

My brother was so intrigued by my (few) fish that he went and stocked a 30g tank (I think it might be OVER stocked)

This is what he got:
2 dwarf gouramis
2 clown loaches
2 dalmatian mollys
3 albino corydoras
3 indian blass fish
6 neon tetras.

They all move around fine... but I think it’s too much!...unless I just like a very spacious tank...

What do you guys think?

ummmm... I'm not an expert so I might be wrong but Clown loaches I believe like big groups. So he had the right idea there, however they get to be a almost a 12 inches each. So going by that alone I do think that the tank is over stocked.

Yup, he is way overstocked. Clown loaches get to be about 18 inches full grown, so he should take them back asap. As far as the other fish, this is what the stocking levels are:

2 dwarf gouramis (4 inches) (If both are males they may fight so keep an eye on them)
2 Dalmation Mollies (6 inches)
3 albino cories (9 inches)
3 indian glass fish (9 inches)
6 Neon Tetras (9 inches)
Total: 37 inches

If he can get rid of 4 inches of the above fish (not including the clown loaches) his tank will be fine (still slightly overstocked, but managable). If he keeps it as it is right now, he will have major problems in the future due to overstocking. Make sure to let him know that when he takes back the fish not to break up any of the schools (glassfish, neons, or cories). Honestly, the schooling fish are better in groups of 4, but groups of 3 is not awful.

I'd keep the cories, I think they're doggone adorable
But something must go...

Get rid of the clown loaches and your fine, don't follow that 1" per rule stuff. It comes down to way more than just inches of fish. Those mollies are probably going to produce more waste than 6 neons.

Everyone has given you great advice. MissMTS is right, if the gouramis are both male (pointed dorsal fin) they will fight unless there are plenty of hiding places for them. So if you're brother wants to keep them both, just make sure there are plenty of plants and caves so that they can each have their own territory.

HA I knew it!! (LOL)

Thank you guys! I bought him a second 30g tank as a gift today . So we will move some of the fish - mostly the big ones, and the clown loaches (we will get 2 more).

Don't get any more clown loaches, and take back the two you have. They will each get AT LEAST a foot long, and that is way too big for a 30 gallon tank. If he really likes the mollies I would recommend moving them over to the other tank and making it a brackish tank, because your mollies will do better under those conditions.

Wow, thats quite a gift. lol.

I love clown loaches, I think they are georgeous...but even just one full grown will be way too big for a thirty gallon tank. I fell in love with them when I saw them at wal-mart, and I got one and put it in a ten gallon tank, not realizing how big he would get. I ended up taking him back to my LFS, and I suggest you do the same.

Here is an excelent source for clown loaches.

As you can see, all of those fish are pretty good size, so unless you want to get a MUCH larger tank, and soon (someone I talked to on here said theirs grew VERY quickly the first year they them), you should probably try returning them.

Hey Butters,
I agree that the 1 inch per gallon rule does not alway hold true. Many of my tanks do not follow that rule. However, I really suggest that beginners stick to it when they are stocking their first tanks because an overstocked tank can cause lots of problems like disease and stunted growth that a beginner may not be prepaired to deal with. As they get more experienced they can play around with the stocking levels if they want to. I just don't think it is a good idea to have your first tank stocked to the maximum.

Yes. Especially with fish such as puffers. Even if they only get 6", they need at least 30 gallons.

Thank you guys!

I’ll move them to my new 200g tank in a few weeks time. (the tank is running – but not stocked yet)... I cannot decide what to get... still researching my options. Thinking of getting Discus fish... or Cichlids... or Gourami’s.... can’t make up my mind LOL!

You guys are a great help!!

200g?! 0.0 How many tanks to do you have?! The Clown Loaches will definitely fit in something like 200 gallons. They do better in groups, so why not get a couple more? As for the rest of the stocking, I personally think you should get lots of Discus. They are so beautiful, but expensive.

Wow, I'd love to randomly receive a fish tank gift. Especially a 30 gallon. You're a great sis!

I only have 2 x 30g tanks that are stocked right now.
I got that BIG one form a guy at work who ‘gave up’ on the tank 6 months ago (lucky hey!?) – actually by boyfriend bought it from the guy at work. So that one is still empty – it’s been running for a few weeks now (new filters and heaters etc) will be stocking it real soon – or as soon as I decide on what to put in there 

So much fun!!

Hahaha, I'd love to see pics of the 200 gal when you've got it going. I think that would be such a fun tank to have! Also glad that you have a home for the clown. I always feel really bad when I have to takea fish back to the pet store.

Hi guys - just to let you know the 200gal is no more - was too big - so I got a + - 60gal now.
I've also sorted out the over stocked tank of my bro. He is left with only: the 2 clown loaches, 2 mollies, 5 neons, 1 idian glass fish and a pleco. they are all still babies so for now its ok.. but in time the pleco and the clowns will go to the 60gal and I'll replace them with 4 guppies.
Now I fell in love with f8 puffers... all pinkfloydpuffer's fault!!
