African Dwarf frogs quarantine methods

Hello all,

I am new to fish keeping and have inherited a pleco, whom I'd like to get some tank-mates for. I've decided to get at least 2 african dwarf frogs and have read up about possible fungus and how to treat them but still have questions. I plan to use my pleco's old 2.5g tank for adf's quarantine using the lamasil treatment for one month before they join my pleco in the new tank. My reasoning for this is just in case an adf doesn't survive, I'd like to have the 5g tank be a safe environment for any new adf's in the future and not have to move my pleco around.
Is this a good plan or is there a better way to go about this?
Also, will I need to cycle the water in the quarantine tank before I add the adf's for the lamasil treatment?

Thanks

Hi welcome to Fish Lore

I love my ADF's, they're a lot of fun to watch.
Are your adf's showing symptoms?

It's been recommended that you have a couple of tanks for your adf's during the treatment. Basically, you'll take the frogs from tank #1, give them the treatment in a separate container and put him in tank #2.
That gives you a chance to completely sterilize tank #1.

You wouldn't be able to cycle these tanks because you'll be sterilizing each one in between treatments.

There's an attachment at the bottom of the first post in this thread that gives detailed instructions on the lamisil treatment.

Chytrid Fungus in ADF's and ACF's

Please read the whole thread, sirdarksol brings up a good point in treating frogs with no symptoms. Personally, I've decided against pre-treating my newest frog, he's been in quarantine for a little over a month.

Good luck, let us know how things go.

Thanks Lucy!

I haven't bought the frogs yet, I am planning to get them this weekend. I just want to prevent any problems in my new tank.

I am still confused if I should treat the frogs when I get them, or wait until I see signs of the fungus. These will be the first frogs to go into the tank. Perhaps just quarantine them for a month?

Thanks for your input, I'll be able to avoid quite a few mistakes thanks to reading this board!

The decision is up to you. Honestly, I couldn't bring myself to pretreat for something my frog might or might not have.

It sounded like it might be kind of rough on them. I contacted the people who gave me the instructions about the treatments and I told them I wasn't going to pre-treat and they said that was ok, but at the first sign of the fungus to start treatments.

Take a good look at the frogs in the tank. If any are showing symptoms or there's dead frogs in the tank. Avoid them.
Since you getting 2, it's probably best that they come from the same tank from the same store. That way they can be in QT together and if necessary treated together.

Just keep your eye on them.

Post some pics when you get them!
