I will be getting my first fish tank today and I would like to know what type of filter would work best its about 20 gallons (88 litres to be exact)

It depends on what you are looking for and what you can afford... obviously canister filters would be the best, but they are usually pricey. A good hang on would be the AquaClear 50 for your 20 gallon tank, they have excellent media choices and available room =)

i have 3 tanks...2 have aqua clear filters and i really prefer it to filters with all-in-one cartridges. by not changing all media at once you maintain a better bio filter. good luck...remember not to stock too many fish at once! i learned the hard way...a lot of work but no fish died. but i'm sure it was close! live and learn!

I agree AquaClear 50 will do the work for you (250GPH), and juloea has a good point due to its flexibility in handling media.

AquaClear technology might be "old-tech" but its quietness, ease of maintenance, and flexibility makes them my favorite HOB too.
