turning off filter at night

Hi everyone.

So, my tank (now going to be 30g instead of ten) is going to be in my bedroom - this new aquarium came with one of those eclipse tops and I haven't tested it yet, but I'm worried it might make noise that would be irritating while trying to go to sleep.

Would there be any long term bad effects to turning off the filter when I turn off the light at night, and then turning it all back on in the morning?

Thanks,

Jonathan

I actually find the white noise (in my case of my air pump) relaxing and helps me sleep.

well, I think that the bacteria in the filter would die... but you better wait for a professional to tell you right. you eventually get used to the noises that the tank makes. I remember when I first got my tank, I topped off my tank because I couldnt sleep, the trickling water of the filter kept me up, and it was like, 1 in the morning.

I have a tank in my bedroom also and it seems if I keep the water right up to the out flow it doesn't make as much noise.
I personally think that turning the filter off and leaving it off over night especially repeatedly would damage your beneficial bacteria colony.

At first my tank seemed really loud, but then I got used to it -like someone already mentioned- and it began to feel relaxing. I don't think you'll have a problem with the sound.

I have two tanks in my bedroom, one of which is an Eclipse, and they don't bother me at all.

I have 3 in my room now, and it hardly makes any noise. But i do find what little noise it does make very relaxing.

I agree with you all you get used to it and it becomes relaxing. I highly do NOT suggest turning filter off for long amounts of time. It can allow ammonia to build up quickly, it will throw beneficiary bacteria out of whack, and worse of all it could cause stress to fish if current is not constant. (That is if there are no other forms of current ex. air bubbles)

I have all 3 tanks in my bedroom - no trouble sleeping with it. After a few hours-days you get used to it and only ever notice it unless someone points it out UNLESS it's a really noisy filter.

If you leave your filter of for over 30mins, the beneficial bacteria start to die off, a whole night and you will be at square 1 of the nitrogen cycle.

I have 4 tanks in my bedroom and the only thing keeping me up at night is my husbands snoring! lol....The filter should be fine running 24/7

To add to the bacteria die off as everyone else did a great job of pointing out... it would also cause a lack of aeration if there is no water movement, which would be bad for the fishies =(

Gonna add my voice to those who have tanks in their bedroom. Mine has a filter, a powerhead, and an air pump running in it, and as long as everything's working properly, none of them make enough noise to bother me. Sometimes the powerhead comes loose from the wall and shifts around so that it starts sucking bubbles from the airstone, which gets really noisy, but that just lets me know that I've got to fix it.

I've got an air pump driven filter and the noise from the pump drove me nuts. But I've got three outher filters in my room and none of them make a sound.

It may take some getting used to, but you will. Filters can be off for longer than 30min with minimal damage (i've had a power outage which dropped mine out for 5hours, i had no probs from this, no mini cycle or such) but i certainly wouldnt deliberately leave it off overnight or hugely extended periods.
