African frog advice

Anyone out there keeping African Dwarf frogs in community tanks?

I have two questions - first, I know they like to hang out on the bottom and then come up for air - is a 2-foot deep tank too deep for one of these frogs to live comfortably?

Second - I know they prefer a PH in the range of 7.2-7.6 - will they do okay in 7.0 or even lower tank? Or would I basically be sentencing them to short, stress filled life? I really want to add a couple of these guys...

Thanks!

Jonathan

7.0 should be fine for the frogs. Not sure how sensitive they are, though, and how lower (or much higher) pH would affect them.
Not sure about the tank depth. I know that a lot of frogs hang out in 1' deep water, but I really know mostly about my local frogs.

I keep 2 African dwarf frogs in a 125g.

The 125g is 21" high and they do fine in it even with a couple of strong powerheads.

Thanks Anna - how long have you had them? Any thoughts on PH?

I have had them for about 6 months, they have moved from the 10g to the 20g to the 55g then into the 125g (they will be moving into the 200g when its finished cycling). They love it and are all over the tank.

My water here is very hard and the pH is about 7.8-8.0, so i'm not sure about water on the more acidic side, sorry.

Anna

I'm sure Lucy can give you more advice. I bought mine before i did any research on them (yes before i realized there was more to fish keeping than i thought)

It looks like SDS and Annadvn have you covered.

The tank height recommended for these cute little guys 12" with a max of 18", however, anna's is taller and she's had hers for 6 months and seem pretty happy.

They can live with a ph that ranges between 6.5-8.2. My ph is 7.6.

If you're planning on getting a couple, it would be a good idea to get both at the same time because of the Chytrid Fungus. If you get one now and one at at later date, it's recommended you quarentine the new one for two months.

You should be aware of this:

Chytrid Fungus in ADF's and ACF's

If you plan on having them in a community tank, make sure they get a chance to eat.
They hunt by smell and their eyesight isn't that great so the fish might get the food first.
That being said, one of mine sees me coming and dances around waiting for his blood worms to drop in. He's by himself in a QT so he doesn't have anyone to compete with.

They're a lot of fun, you'll enjoy them. Good luck.

These little guys by far are the most comical additions you can ad to a fishtank, I recomend them to anyone w/ a fishtank.... however right now w/w the issues w/ the fungus... I would put them in a Q tank and follow the cyntrid fungus treatment on your frogs prior to putting them in your tank, after the research I have done on it there is an extremely high population of fishstores that have it in their tanks w/ the african frogs.

I am getting some whites tree frogs and its the same with all amphibians right now, they are recomending treating all frogs when you first purchase them.

Also, be very carefull of what you do with the water when you are changing your tank, if it gets out in your yard or anywhere in the local area you can expose local amphibians to that fungus (until after your froggies have been treated) I am pretty sure they said the water from changing out your tank put it in a bucket and add bleach to it before pouring it out.

I love these little guys to death, and If I ever buy anymore for my tanks they will be put in a q tank and treated for 2 weeks prior to any exposure to the community tank.

Follow Lucy's link I am pretty sure it has the treatment for the african clawed frogs/dwarf frogs.

I read that 2-3 feet is the mx depth for ADF, you should be fine. When it comes to ADF.

I have heard they are jumpers ... is there any way to prevent that other than buying the generic light/hood combo? It seems like anything else will leave an opening where the filter is...

I have a 5g mini bow and he got out through a little opening next to the filter.
I just cut a peice of card board to cover it.
