Saltwater To Freshwater

Hey people!
i have had a saltwater tank and everything died! and its just not working out for me so i want to go to fresh water! i have a few questions.
1. will the gravel stuff i have in the bottom be fine in fresh water?
2. my tank is 50L what are some good fish that are cool to look at i can put in there?
3. i know pH is different but will my test lab kit be fine for fresh??
andi would love any other tips on getting started!! thankyou SQUEAKY

WOW! I've never really heard about changing from Saltwater to Freshwater aquarium. But I did hear it's quite hard and complicating. You could probably start of with a few Guppies or Tetras. They're quite easy and simple to take care of. I'm not sure of how many so wait for the other experienced members to come! GOOD LUCK!

The coral sand (or whatever you have) is not suitable for FW. I reccomend taking out everything, and starting it like a brand new tank.

That's a 10gal tank. Good fish would be...

a Male betta

5 male platys/guppys

6 Neon tetras

6 male Endler's livebearers

12 Ember tetras

A mix of small nano fish (Like pygmy gouramis, ember tetras, male endler's livebearers)

I dont think hatch meant ALL of those together..its one or the other...and make sure you read up on the nitrogen cycle..thats something that NEEDS TO BE DONE no matter SW or fw tanks http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm

GOODLUCK!

I'd probably clean everything good with hot water, then cycle the tank fishless. You'll need a FW test kit.

I'd swap tetras for danios. As i heard one person put it, "Danios could live in a cup of coffee."

Not really. All the species I listed where complete stockign plans. But, you could have 6 Embers, 3 Endler's and 1 Pygmy gourami. And with all the different strains of Guppys/Platys, thats like having lots of different species.

Tap water should be fine as long as you dechlorinate it with a dechlorinator liquid, like Prime, Stress coat or AquaSafe.

Just a quick suggestion: I would definitely get Prime or Stress coat over AquaSafe... it can cloud the water.

Hi squeak
If they are your only options for water , I would use the rain water .
Bore water can have high levels of things like sodium ( salt ) so unless you have had it tested , its hard to say if it would be ok . Bottled water would be way too expensive .
Eaglescout mentioned Danios as an option for your fish . They are great little fish .
The only thing you need to buy is gravel/substrate that is suitable for fresh water . I'm guessing , but presume you have a filter and heater ( heaters are not needed for danios unless your tank gets really cold ) and probably lights .
For around $20-30 Aus you could easily transform the tank to fresh water and stock it with a small school of fish .

ok Then so try rain water first
i'm pretty sure our bore water has little or no salt in it so yeah!

thankyou squeak

You cant use pure rain water, it doesnt contain enough trace minerals to stablize the waters pH levels, and the lack of minerals will also hurt the fish in the long run. You would need to add a supplement to make the rain water suitable for use... it would be cheaper to buy gallons of spring water in this case.

When I used it it never clouded my water... But Prime is much better so I'd use that. Stress coat is pretty cool - I use it because its better than aquasafe and I can't get prime here.

I don't see why you need to use spring water when the water from your taps should be fine... Even if it does have ammonia the Prime will neutralize it.

What is 'Bore' water?
