Signs of illness could be anything for finrot, ick and fungus (white cottony patches) to parasites and worms.

Have I said anything about Maidenhead aquatics yet? If I haven't, I'll say now to be safe. In the UK we are blessed with an amazing chain store called maidenhead aquatics - you should be able to find at least 1 in your local area! They 'hide' inside garden centres, there is always a sign for them outside though.

Just checked and the nearest one is 50 miles away from norwich, which is a bit far sadly, thanks for the advice though.

No worries! If you ever get the chance to go there, it's an aladin's cave.

We're supposed to but can you imagine how much it would cost to replace every single roadsign in the country, and how difficult it would be? A lot of people just use miles... It's confusing for us kids though learning 2 different measurements!

I had always thought that you guys were totally converted. The cost of changing signs was one of the main reasons the US never converted. When I was in 6th or 7th grade in the early 70's we were told in school that the US will be switching really soon.

I am happy using both, the only one that annoys me is the diffrence between uk and us gallons. It seems utterly pointless, why can't we just agree!!!

Ok, if you added tetra safe start, have you added pure ammonia drops or fish food to the tank?

if you havent then your bacteria will die because there is no food for them since the tank is empty. When you use products like Tetra Safe Start you NEED a source of food for the bacteria otherwise it will die. This food can be either fish waste from adding the fish, pure ammonia drops, fish flakes or raw shrimp. My recommendation is either adding fish or ammonia drops ASAP to avoid loosing the tetra safe start.

although if it has been more than a few days since you added it, without any food source, it might be too late and you probably already lost the product.

allessa, I think I've posted somewhere that I don't have 'safe-start'.

I have 'Stability', I'm not sure how this product works to be honest.

What I'm planning on doing (from tommorow) is test the water, to see whats going on (ie, amonia, nitirite ect) then if i see 0 amo..0 nitrite, and some nitrate, I'll assume this 'stability' is working, and i will continue putting the cap-full a day alone.

However I doubt this will be the case and I will buy some pure amonia just to try and start my cycle.

does this sound like a good plan??
(thanks for your concern)

Stability doesn't provide a cycle from what I heard - just a fake one. I'd do it the traditional fishless way - with ammonia or fish food.

I think I've remembered why stability doesn't work: because it has terrestrial nitrifying bacteria that need replacing every week.

ok sos my tank is cycled, I went to my lfs, and told them of my plan

she said she 'strongly' advises me not to put danios with guppies, because the danios will fin-nip

I explained that in a group of 6 the danios shouldn't be aggresive, also that there are kind of hiding places around my tank.

She still maintained it wasn't a good idea.

What should I do, do I need to change my whole stocking plan or just go ahead as originally planned

6 danios
3 male guppies
3 panda corries??

Thanks for your continued assistance

Jake

The danios may still fin nip even in a group of 6 or more, especially pretty fancy tailed guppies. Danios like flowy flashy fins and sometimes nip at them. Keeping them in bigger schools can lessen the problem, but doesn't always eleminate it. Try it...but make sure you have a plan "B" in case it doesn't work. You might see if you could return the danios to your LFS if they are nippers. Good Luck to you!

I think my plan B is to return the guppies if there being bullied and add something that won't provide such a temptation for being fin-nipped.
