Tanks Water Color is Weird Looking

Hello All,

Yes it is me again. The fish bum who has only had her tank for no less than 10 months, I am back on the forum(Father took it away) and, well I go shopping at the fish store a lot. Like, that's where I spend most of my time. But anyways, my water has always been.... how would you say dirty. Even though every Saturday I'm there with the rock cleaner, the PH, and a bucket of clean water. So I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong! We only have a 10 gallon tank, and it's simple to clean, but all I want is pretty water so my fish can live even happier! Tomorrow, I will post close up pictures, and far away ones so you can see the whole tank, and some of the fish in it. Just a note I am not doing mollies anymore, I do have 2 left but when they go I am going to be a full tetra tank. And I'm getting suckers! There my algae maids!!!

Smaller tanks are much harder to keep under control..what are your water parimters? and .what are the fish in it and how much water changes are you doing?

I wouldnt get any "suckers" because they are total poo' kinda fish..unless you get a bn or some corys or ottos, but again, depends on whats in there already....and hows your tap water?

I wouldn't get 'suckers'. Most algae eating fish don't do much - and the only suckermouth fish that would fit in a 10gal are otos.

What are your water parameters? If you add the the pH altering stuff, stop doing it. It is only a temporary change, and fish don't like the fluctuating pH. They can adapt to average tap water and thrive in it.

What fish do you have in your tank? It may be overstocked.

Well, I have 3 tetras, and 1 male black molly. The tap water I use is RO, so it is like super duper clean. And the PH stuff I'm talking about was prescribed for every other week, it's this 5 stuff that I need for my tank. The fish in it need to have it, other wise bad things happen. No wonder my tank is never totally clear. It always looks like..... rain water. Something that is just the tad-est bit dirty.

Your fish don't need pH adjuster - tetras are pretty hardy and can adjust to most pH's - especially rainwater which is more acid than most water. Fluctuating pH is what makes bad things happen.

When you say dirty do you mean you can see lots of floating debris or did you mean the color of the water?

pleas do add some pictures up. its kinda hard to get a picture of what your talking about. But, a ph thats constantly changing is a big no no for fish. the tetras will manage.

The water color is just dirty. If there was anything floating around I would run to the store for a better filter.

What kind of light are you using? sometimes the color spectrum makes your water look yellow or dirty looking.
Also if you have driftwood it may have tannins leeching out making the water look dirty. This is harmless and the fish love it.

If its dusty looking (white) then its because of bacteria, you might be overdoing the cleaning.... If its brown to yellowish tan then its possibly because of either driftwood leaching tannins or the ph lowering product that you use, ph lowering additives use a similar acid to the one produced by driftwood and or peat and will cause yellowish water color.... If its green then its caused by an algae bloom

You mean a light browny colour? Those twice weekly water changes should really help - unless you have a light colour that makes it look dirty.

Clinton it's either driftwood or the PH. Because it's most definitely not white.

If it's driftwood, it's because you didn't soak it for a few weeks in a bucket.

Driftwood can make it look anywhere from light tea colored to dark tea color. Water changes will remove it over time and is not harmful. Carol
