* ohh dear SNAILSS! a snaily problem haha :;rfro*

I've bought some new plants for my tank, and i put them in about 2 weeks ago.

i went on holiday for a week (dont worry i put the food dispenser in for the guppies) and when I got back, there were literally HUNDREDS of tiny snails in my tank!!

I think it might be my fault as before i went on holiday i noticed a few tiny specks and thought, 'oh how cute, a few little snails wont do any harm!' and as they were eating the algae building up on the side of tank i thought that
they would be fine. Well they seem to have BRED!! lol

So i immediatly cleaned out my tank, scrubbed everything down and thought i had got rid of all the little bu**ers! but my tank's little compartment with the sponges and the filter, heater etc are quite tricky to get rid of the snails as there are tiny nooks and crannies that i just cant get to!
So i cleanerd them all out yesterday and this morning i woke up and yes there was a lovely fresh new tank for the guppies but overnight the snails must have got busy because there were MORE!!!! lol

So, can anybody please tell me if there are any chemicals or anything that i can use to kill these snails, because they are doing my head in and making my tank dirty and eating my guppies food!

*I have thrown out the plants as they brought over the snails in the first place btw*

I had the same problem, the snails look cute when there are only 2

If you have room in the tank, yoyo loaches will sort it out straight away, but then need to be kept in a group of 3 and they get to 6", not sure about your tank size. I read elsewhere that had-a-snail can be deadly to some plants, not sure if it's true or not but might be worth reasearching.

Most snail killing products are copper based which works fine, but the copper salts kill all invertabrates, including shrimp. If you plan on keeping any fresh water shrimp in the tank, the copper is also very hard to get out of the tnakl system. Thus if you use one of these treatments, keep that in mind if you ever plan to stock fresh water inverts.

One simple technique is just to squish the snails on the glass and let you fish eat them. I tired that but my fish apparently had no taste for escargot, so now I just take a small net and scoop them off the sides of the tank and toss them out with the trash.
