what is it?

Our tank is only a week old and we have this white algae or something growing on this log. Anyone have an idea?

Is the wood new too?

If so, this is pretty normal in a new setup, as whatever organics in the wood leech out.

Just take out the wood and scrub it off. Or you can try boiling the wood to remove anything left in it.

If you didn't soak the wood before you put it in then definetly yes. Even if you did Tannin is rediculas to try and get out before hand. I've had a small piece soaking for the last week and it's still turning the water brown.

Also where did you get the wood from? If it hasn't been sealed (and don't quote me here look this up yourself to double check) it might be that there was some sort of fungas spores in your wood. (I just read that somewhere and haven't checked it out yet though and if you follow Barbella's advice that should clean it up anyway.)
Good Luck!
