I love Craigslist

Well, my little 10 gallon has already cycled (helps using a biowheel, filter media, and all gravel, from a previously established setup). I have a little Julli Cory that has done great for 3 days now.

I started looking on Craigslist for stuff. I live in a small town, but just big enough to appear in their search, but when I type in "Fish" the last hits are July 20th (the 20 gallon I was trying to get), July 13th, June 24th, etc; not really much listed. So I checked my parent's town, about two hours away, and low and behold "55 gallon fish tank, stand, and accessories - make offer" so I did, at $50. I should be picking up my tank this afternoon 55 gallon, 50lbs of small/medium gravel, filter, black iron stand, filter, air pump and stone (no top, but oh well there), automatic feeder, nets, chemicals, and lots of other stuff.

My question; how do I go about cleaning it once it's here? I know no soap or anything, just hot water and a new scrub brush? I've never owned a tank I got used.

You can use a solution of 1 part bleach to 19 parts water, then rinse thourghly and fill with water that has been overdosed with water conditioner (to remove any residual chlorine from the bleech).

If you have white stains from hard water on the glass, you can use vinegar to clean it.

Good luck

Congrats on your new tank! It's quite a good deal!

Every Fishlore member says it is recommended to clean and scrub with vinegar. Don't scrub too hard because you don't want to scratch the tank.

Update us when you're tank arrives!

Good luck!

Congrats on the fantastic deal! Be sure to post pics when its up and running I was going to suggest both of the above, so either one would work

Wow, what a great deal!

I agree with jdhef, you never know if the last inhabitants were ill.

Well, the guy I was getting the tank from couldn't have it ready until tomorrow morning. I checked local Craigslist today and low and behold, a 55gallon, with solid (not metal) stand, hood, 2 power filters, Visi-therm Stealth heater, and (if I want them) 2 large blood parrot cichlids, all at only $25 more than I was going to give for the other tank. I feel bad leaving the other guy, but $50 in gas, plus the heater, extra filter, gravel, and lids make it a deal I can't pass up. I have already talked to the owner on the phone and she said it's mine and I can get it Sunday morning! Shouldn't be too long on the cycle since the rocks and filters are still being used and will be transported in water from the tank so the bacteria doesn't die. My head is swimming with ideas now. I'm thinking a tank with several schools.
