My new Fitty Five (55)!!

I am so freakin excited!! I have been trolling around, and finally got my 55 gallon for my birthday. It is cycling now, and I am going through the fish planning stages. Any recommendations are welcome since you all obviously have a lot of experience.

I am thinking about starting off with Tetras and Barbs. Also, I need to get some plants added to it tonight.

I look forward to chatting with you all.

Jim

welcome to Fishlore! Congrats on your new tank & your knowledge of fishless cycling! You'll have quite an active tank with tetras & barbs - just remember that they're both schooling fish and need at least 6 of each kind. Good luck!

I think I may have to upgrade my lights. It looks like I only have 30 Watts total so I am concerned my new plants may not do well.

I don't know anything about plants (mine are all plastic and silk...), but your tank looks great so far and I really like your gravel.

My next tank (which will be larger than what I have now naturally) is going to have khulli loaches and glass catfish. You could go for unusual types like that. They are pretty awesome.

My wife really wants me to get bigger fish in it. Personally, I would rather have more fish doing different things in the habitat. The Cichlids are quite cool, and they are definitely on the short list.

Here it is with some new plants. I have a mix of fake and real plants in there. I think it is coming along nicely. Expensive hobby though!!

Congrats on the new tank and happy birthday. I would pick bigger cichlids... but the smaller fish would be fun to watch also. Good luck, and Welcome to fishlore.

Oh yeah, the tank looks great also, I like your plants.

Nice arrangement you made there! Wellcome to fishlore Jim!
There are so many stocking options, I guess you would make up your mind several times before your final decision. You could go from a big guy only, to species only tank -e.g. School of Rainbowfish or compatible African Cichlids, to comunity tank with assorted schooling fishes.
Enjoy the planning, it's a great part of fishkeeping!

wow! that looks great! congrats!

My recomondations that might make you and your wife happy are 2 of my favs to watch first is a Bala (they say only one for a 55 gallon) and also a silver dollar (I have 2) both types are fun to watch because of their unique personalities and get kinda Big. My silver dollars went from the size of quarters to 2"x2" in a month of good feeding. My fish Love Blood worms!
