I have a new aquarium and want to move my fish to it how do i do it?

I have a 2 gallon aquarium and I just bought a new 2.5 gallon aquarium that has a better filter and more room. I have 2 tetra and 2 african dwarf frogs... I was wondering how I should transfer my fish to the hew aquarium...

welcome to fishlore!!

id take the old filter and put it on the new tank and use as much gravel and deco from the old tank in the new one..that might help with the cycle of the new one...

.5 gallons isnt alot bigger so you shouldnt have too hard of a time

see the thing is that I have an underwater filter for the old one that they are currently living in and in the other I have a whisper power filter which is a lot better in clarity=, sound, and biological components. I have had the new one up and running since this past friday at 630 and wanted to do the transfer tom or tuesday to the new tank. Is it okay if I just use a net and move them from tank to tank or do i need to buy plastic bags and acclamate them into the new tank? I talked to a guy at petco who said that he does that sort of change all the time, but I want these fish to be good and healthy so I want to do this right, The big reason I am changing tanks is the water quality, and in the other tank I am going to clean it and put a betta fish into it... any suggestions on that too?

As long as the new tank is cycled, and the temp. & pH are the same in both tanks, I would just net them and move them. That's what I did with my bettas. Most of the people on this forum are going to say that a betta needs a 5 gallon minimum, and I agree. I have 2 male bettas in a divided 10 gal. & they love it. That may be a good option for you. Try Craigslist.com to see if they have any tanks for sale in your area for cheap.

ok so everyone would say that a quick transfer is okay? How long do I need to wait to do it. Should I do it tom or tuesday? And for the 2 galloin tank, not even a small betta?

do you have a test kit? when your ammonia & nitrites are 0, and you have a reading of nitrates under 20, your tank is safe...probably a couple weeks to cycle a 2.5 if you arent using some beneficial bacteria to cycle...

Hi dbutler welcome to Fish Lore

Congrats on wanting to give your frogs and fish more room, but
they really need a larger tank than a 2.5.g, at least 5g for the frogs alone.

Although I agree with Amanda about bettas doing best in at least 5g's (mine is in a 10g) I think some members have had luck keeping them in a 2.5. She's right about Craig's List, you can really get a bargain there.

You've gotten good advice on how to move them.

Post some pics of your new tank when you get set up.

Good luck.
