White stuff in my water
I have these little white things floating in my tank water. They look kinda like dandruff or lice or something, at least in size. It's not a bacterial bloom since the water isn't cloudy and is actually pretty clear other than these specks.
The picture shows them but they're kinda blurry since they're moving around all the time. It's all over the tank!!
I'm currently cycling this tank fishless with ammonia. Struggling with it as the cycle just refuses to start. Anyways, what are these things and how would I get rid of them??

are they stuck to the glass? It kinda looks like the beginning of hair algae. another possability would be hydriods they are little white things stuck to the glass that have 4 tentacles. They are basicly freshwater jellyfish. but form your description i think we are going to have to wait for some other fishloreans. :-)

I have that "problem" in my 145gal tank, the only one without Apple Snails. My Tiguer Oscars would end up killing them. I'm figurin out the solution, but so far I do regular glass cleaning -with very little long term effect. It looks like some kind of algae to me.
However, don't worry about that now, until you finish your fishless-cycle. What do you mean by the cycle refuses to start?

Well these things stick to the glass at the back of the tank but the majority of them are just floating in the water. I know the picture is no good in really showing you what they are but they have me scared. If it's hair algae, do I need to worry? Is there a way of getting rid of them without affecting the cycle?
Oh, and by the cycle refuses to start, I meant that my ammonia wasn't moving, there was no sign of nitrites, and the nitrates were not moving either. That went on for over 2 weeks until I did an almost complete water change and changed water conditioners (converted to Prime).

do they look likr they have "tentacles"?
If they do then they are hydras and I have the same. The only way to remove them effectively is scrubbing the tank, although for the most part they are harmles...
if they dont have tentacles... it souds like a type of hair algae to me, although I have no experience with this one

They kind of look like what I used to get sometimes, although I've never seen them free floating, just stuck to the glass. I haven't seen them for a while now.
I just wiped them off when I did water changes. Sorry, I don't know what they are.
Now that your cycle's complete, you can do a huge water change and wipe down the glass.
So, 'things' is my answer, big help, I know. lol
Hopefully someone can identify them for you.

I don't think it has tentacles it's more just like strands with nothing sticking out anywhere. So this shouldn't be something I should stress about? Do you think it would be harmful to my fish if I put them in there while this stuff was there?

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to add ammonia a few more times when it come down to 0 just to make sure that the tank is actually cycled. I think this stuff was there from before that huge wc I did and just multiplied after that. I really hope these things aren't harmful to my fish, but from what you're all saying, it shouldn't be a big concern.

Update on the white stuff. It has started to go away. Turned on the light today when I was testing the water and noticed that it's about half as much now. Big relief!!

It looks like it may even go before I put in the fish!! I'm waiting until the weekend just in case and adding ammonia everyday to keep it cycled. I got a slight ammonia reading today, less than .5 but more than 0. That's why I'm taking the little bit longer to put my fish friends in.
