Mini cycle near end?

I don't know if it was mini but it was bad enough to get our large male Red Fin sick. This is our 46Gal.

Ammonia- 0
Nitrite- 5
Nitrate- 10

I was at the LFS and got some stress-zyme from API along with a API test kit which is where the results were. I have added 3 cap fulls of it tonight. This was my first time doing it but I am pretty sure we did it right (the test and stress-zyme).

I have removed the fish from this tank and put them in what we were using as our fry tank. It's a 20Gal with a TetraTec PF 300 on it for 4 adult cichlids 1-Male, 2-Female Red Fins and 1- Male Yellow Lab.

Test of 20Gal

Ammonia- 0
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 0 (is it possible?)

Reason- I was dumb and too anxious and did a full gravel change thinking the Canister filter had enough bacteria to support the bio load.

Now to the question for you guys.
From my reading. Is it right that I just need to wait it out until the Nitrites 0 out too?

Yes, you need to wait until nitrites are 0 too.

One never should underestimate the ammount of bacteria in the gravel... it is quite a lot! thats why we dont change it.

you should do 50% waterchanges daily and wait. it most likely will be over in a few days.

my suggestion on the 0 nitrate reading is, did you really bang that #2 nitrate bottle on a counter or somewhere hard? those crystals are very hard to mix up and sometimes give a false reading when not mixed very well...

and if you can get some prime, that will lock down any ammonia and nitrites for 24hours in between water changes..I dont think it will take you but a couple days to lower the nitrites in the main tank with daily water changes

I found that banging on the counter wasn't working because the counter wasn't hard enough. Now I just bang it on my head!

Thanks.. After using stress-zyme for a few days, the nitrites have dropped to .25. As for the 0 nitrate I did do the 46Gal first and was able to get them. I will test again tomorrow night and let you know.

Thanks again.

I was hoping the 20Gal was cycled. Been running for a few months now and didn't do anything with it. Think it was just not shakin enough. I went through and shook them up a lot and knocked them on the table a bit.

Thanks. Right now I have just the Lab in the 46 to keep some bio load in there. I have the Large Male who was getting attacked in the 20G with the 2 females so I don't have to use as much meds. 10ml per 20gal or 45ml for a 46gal each day.
