MTS: The Next Generation

Ok, so we got my son's 25 gal set up (mostly, thinking a background to block some light would be helpful). I noticed the back of the hood is a little more open than I'd like. I think I'd like to have some floating plants in there, just to discourage any potential escapees. I've read that hornswart <sp?> is a good floating plant. Any other ideas for a fast growing, fairly lowlight, attractive floating plants?

Hornwort it is then! We're off to the store later this evening anyway, the old filter I tried to make work is just giving up the ghost, and I about lost my temper a while a go. I'm just gonna get him a new one. I mean it's not like it's gonna set him back too far anyway, I'll just take out the filter material I stuffed in the old one, stuff it back into the new one and 1 day won't make that big of a difference. Fortunately nobody is living in it yet. Now that I'm thinking about it, should we wait a while to put the plant in the tank, or would we be alright to buy it and put it in the tank right away when we set up the new filter? The water in the tank is already treated with Prime...that was the water conditioner I had on hand at the time. Also, should we use any special treatment (fertilizers or such) for the hornwort, other than just dropping them in a letting them grow? BTW, my boy says "Thanks for the help". I told him this was a really cool site to help us learn how to take care of our fish and he's been on reading and taking notes too. It's just so funny, while we're talking about what we're gonna do with the tank he's starting, he's already talking about the next 1 we do!!!

I don't know anything about the plant you got, but remember to sterilize any new plants you get before you plop them in the tank! Just run them under warm water, and then cold water, and repeat a couple of times, most things will not survive the temperature shock, but your plants should be fine.

putting your filter media in the new filter will be great..just keep an eye on the water parimeters for a mini cycle..but using the entire filter should curb that..also for your plant, get a bowl of ice water and dip it a few times ...ive read many threads that this will release any hitchhikers and kill most things...goodluck and make sure u get us some pics!

I remember the snail thing now that you all mention cleaning those plants. The last thing I need is to be squishing an overabundance of snails....ewwwwwwwwww! Also, I'll have some pics after the 8th of August. Oldest is coming in town and has promised she would show me how to take and send the pics with a digital camera. Pathetic to be tech-illiterate.
