mopani=white fuzz and brown water

okay, so i recently got a piece of mopani wood for my new 29g. i soaked it in a bucked, changing the water daily, until the water was clear. then i put it in my 29 and it was fine for a couple of days. then i went away for a few days and when i came back the wood had this white fuzz all over it and the water was a light brown color. also, the glass has this other white stuff on it. i want to call it algea, but it's white and it sorta hangs off the glass like string, but the string part is only a couple of mm's long. could this be from the feeding block i put in while i gone? please help me, i don't know what to do.

When I added my first piece of mopani wood I just added it to the tank I had the same "fuzz" until I picked up a few otos (part of the plan, didn't notice the fuzz until shortly after they went into the tank). I never noticed any fuzz on my newer larger pieces but by that time I already had 8 otos who I'm assuming took care of it for me.

The feeding block could by chance of played a part in the matter though - I can't say for sure.

Forgot to mention - I believe the wood will still slowly release tannins even after being soaked. I never soaked mine because I perfer the slight tea-color but even after a few months of normal water changes the water color is still the same.

This is pretty normal. I had the exact same thing happen. Almost a year later, I have very little coloring in the water. The fuzz, however, only lasted a month or so.

Yea, we had that fuzz pop up a month or 2 after we added the wood and it's cleared out now.

If you do not like the tannins in the water, pick up a pouch of Seachem Purigen. I have had great success using it in my tanks. You can also regenerate it when the color changes to brown. Do not use Stress Coat if you wnat to regenerate it (Prime is ok). The white fuzz is also very common, it is not hazardous to your tank.

I just added a few twigs to my latest scape, and all those have fuzz on. Perfectly normal!

great! thanks... i was a little worried for a sec. good to know that it isnt harmfull. also, i kinda like the brown in the water since my flourescent light makes the water look purple. now, it is sorta cancelled out and it looks quite natural.

I'm using water from the bucket that I 'QTed' the wood in to 'dye' the water on my Betta tank as well... IMO a little stain can really add to the scape.
