I usually make Rick deal with that, cuz i can't bear to look at them.
I would CRY all day!!!
But on the rare occasion i have to do it, i carefully wrap them in a paper towel and put them in the garbage.
oh, why did you make me think about that?

Talk about a depressing thread....
I usually flush them. I would bury them, but we live in an apt, so we don't have a yard to do it in. I don't think our neighbors would appreciate it if we turned the rose garden in front of our building into a fish cemetary, lol.

ooooh Im sorry, dont mean to depress anyone....
I wondered what I should do... So far I've put them amongst my flowers as I felt that I love my flower beds and I have loved my fishies and the fish would bring more bloom to my flowers....
When my beautiful bird died her name was Bella, I buried her in the garden and put a flowering bush of her colours ontop.. so now each year when its in full bloom I call it my bella bush...

Step one: Cry.
Step two: Bury the named ones. Flush the ones that died in initial QT... try not to get too attached to them until they've been around a few weeks.
How sad to think of... I don't want to bury any more fishes this month... been too many.

Wow what a depressing thread... A word of advice, if you don't want to bury fish now and then, don't keep Bettas. They only live less than 2 years which is short for me. I've buried 7 of them last year at different times. IT WAS SADDENING! Actually, I buried 1, wrapped and threw 4 into the garbage and flushed 2 into the toilet. I actually called them my 7 musketeers or 'perfect 7' because they would always keep me company when I was alone and talk to them whenever I needed someone to talk to. I got so attached to them I couldn't let go but I had to.
Anyways, that's my advice.

I bury them under a plant. Fish gets reintroduced to life cycle, plant gets fertilizer, my garden is a little bit healthier.
I don't consider this to be too depressing of a thread. It's come up a couple of times before, and the first time it came up, many people hadn't given the issue any thought and didn't realize the options they had.

First I feel guilty (regardless of the cause of death), then bury in the garden. If you haven't a garden, have you considered a potted plant? (a big one that lasts, not a little annual or one that gets frequently repotted; Molly's remains were given to a staghorn fern.) It's always sad to lose a critter - even the little wild ones.

whew.. thankyou Sir and Catlady.... I was beginning to think I brought sadness to the community ..... I flushed a friend down the loo once and felt awful... so I thought, there must be a better way and I think the garden and flowers is a much better way to say bye bye...

May look depressive, but it's a fact we will face. We are likely to survive all of our fishes. And they, sadly, happen to die. I lost a beautiful female red-salmon rainbowfish yesterday. I let my tears out -I have no problem with showing my emotions at all. And since I live in a flat with no garden, I respectfully flush the corpse down the toilet, thanking God for allowing me the care of such magnificent creature.
I don't blame myself much, I don't keep fish with the intention of killing them, I do my best, even though I make mistakes as I go, some of them fatal -left the lid of the gohst shrimp tank wide open and found two dead ones on the floor; left six young convicts without enough caves to hide from noon to evening and two got brutally killed -fish parts all over.
Maybe I got into Oscars and Severums because they can live for 10 to 15 years? I don't know for sure, but as depressive as this subject is, at least we have company in fishlore to share and live our grieve. I get attached with them from the way of the LFS to home, can't help it.
