Does a Quarantine tank need to be cycled too?

Hey guys!

I'm thinking of setting up my own quarantine tank at home but not sure how. Any tips? The quarantine tank might be for glowlight tetras and cherry barbs. Does it need to be cycled too?

A quarantine tank is always a good idea.

It should be cycled, you can keep extra filter sponges in your established tank to transfer to your quarantine tank when needed, or run a small (but big enough for your q tank) filter in your established tank for quick transfer.

Lucy, where do you get the filter sponges you're always mentioning, I don't want to sound stupid but it seems like a good idea to have on hand and I'm clueless.

You don't sound stupid.
They carry them in any fish store.

Thanks Lucy, you have a nice way to make my ignorance sound not so bad, lol... Are they called filter sponges? For awhile I thought you meant regular kitchen sponges bought from the store, but figured that couldn't be it (see i can be stupid!)

We all started out not knowing what anything was, as we get further into fishkeeping, we learn new things everyday, and no you're not stupid. lol

You can use whatever you use in your filter if you have extras.....minus the carbon, if you use it.

Something like this would work:

I keep my quarantine tank running with at least (ready to move over) fancy guppies in it. They get good care for keeping the bacteria alive, and provide some live fry food for the big fishes. Don't know about saltwater quarantine tanks, but it works fine for freshwater.

I also wondered what was meant by extra sponges, but was too afraid to ask LOL. I ended up buying an inside the tank sponge filter, before figuring out that I could stash extra sponge media inside my running filters LOL. It took me no time to realize that keeping extra HOBs running wouldn't hurt either -except for the electricity cost- since there's no such thing as "too much filtration".

The few, but tense, times I have used the hospital tank (so far for stress, temporal housing due to aggression) I remove the fancy guppies (easy to catch with the net, not like zebra danios or small convict cichlids), who enjoy some time in the "community tank resort and spa", and bring the delicate patient in.

My quarantine tank set up was my not-so-undercovered/disguised-path into MTS.

Thanks Lucy! Can quarantine tanks be made out of plastic tanks?
