Red wag platy

I have a couple questions about dividing aquariums? Will the filter filter both sides of the aquarium even though the are separated? What about the heater? Air pump? And last, do they sell aquarium dividers at fish stores or do you have to make your own? If you have to make your own how would you do it?

They sell dividers at Petsmart. I have a divided 10 gal. I have the filter in one side & a heater on the other.
