rearranging tank with fish

Can I?? re-arrange the decorations in my tank while having the fishes inside.. I have 3 driftwood, one flat type rock.. and would like to rearrange them to accomidate the plants I just got (onion plant type).. . Can it be done with the fishes inside?? Or will I need to remove them?? I will probably be moving the driftwood and rock around (it will disturb thier hiding place).. and planting the 3 plants... Along with a partial water change..

I just finished the Cycle .. Lost 3 Cardinals, and 1 Otto..

there are currently 4 corydora's, 3 otto's, 9 Cardinal's, 14 Redline Rasboyas.. and just found a snail.. not sure what kind though..

the tank size is 48x24x16 inches

I calculate approx 18 Inches of fish left (I think).. how many Discus and/or Angelfish would that be??

I read that discus are best kept in species tanks only. They have specific water needs that other fish don't easily match.

You can put some angelfish in there, but both Discus and angels are very sensitive to poor water conditions, so I would wait until the tank has been cycled for awhile and there is zero nitrites and ammonia.

Discus are not beginner fish, so I would go with angels.

Yes, you can change the decor around with the fish in the tank. I do it all the time.

Just do it with very slow movements, so you don't terrorize the fish and cause them to either jump out or crash into decorations or the glass and harm themselves.

I change the decor in our tanks around often with the fish in. Just watch them so nobody gets squashed on accident.

Becareful about the 1" rule when stocking your tank. That rule only works well with smaller fish.

Would angels eat the cardinals? Not sure, just thought I'd throw that out there.

You'd be pretty safe. (Or should I say, the cardinals should be!)
That would be 3 angels.

thanks.. I re-arranged my tank and finally have it setup the way i wanted.. I added the onion plant and looks great swaying.. I also added a couple of Moss balls .. they seem to be a no fuss plant.. just drop em and leave em type.. I added the java moss.. but I guess i didnt tie them well and was breaking up and made a mess.. I took it out and went with the moss balls instead.. everybody seems much happier with this setup.. especially the cories.. ill try to take pics this week..

- I'm dropping the whole discus idea .. great looking fish.. but I got tired just reading up on em.. as for the angels not eating the cardinals, and rasboya's.. i was planning on getting the little angel's so it will take time before they do... kidding (maybe .. you never know with these guys) . I'm choosing the smaller ones for two reasons.. its cheaper and will probably leave the others alone when they grow up (thats the theory)...

I just thought of another option.. guppies.. they are small.. and can stay with the theme of small fishes in a large tank thing and are colorful.. i was just reading on how they breed and they seem to be prolific breeders (i can shine a red light at a corner of the tank).. what are the chances of fry's surviving if they do breed and with minimal intervention?

I personally say never ever ever combine both sexes of Livebearers unless breeding is planned, or you want to overstock your tank! Males are smaller and look nicer in Guppys, so go with those.

Yeah, they don't fight, no fry, they're smaller and you have more colour.

Definitely plan on fry if you have female guppies. The survival rate would depend on the hiding places for them.
