So I am moving house at the end of August. The place I am moving to is 3hrs drive from where I live now. Now this is where I have a problem!!! How do I transport my fish safely, some say I could get rid of them but I don't want to, I love them too much. So please guys I need some advice on what to do.

I know people ship fish overnight I think they use oxygen tabs in the containers. I have also read about battery powered air pumps with a small air stone at the top of the water if they were in a bucket or some other container. You want to keep the air stone towards the top to airate the water but not stir up waste that might build up. I would think no matter how you move them the most important thing would be to get them out of the containers and into their tank because the water you transport them in will probably be getting nasty after 3 or 4 hours.
hope this helps and good luck.

Thanx. I will have to purchase some plastic containers cause my fish are quite large and I will have to put one fish per container. I think I will use the oxygen tabs for the water. I have alot of fish to transport. I am soooo worried, I just pray they will be ok!!!

Good luck with the move. I hope your fish make it ok. We will be moving in October, but we don't know where yet... My hubby is in the army and getting recruiting duty.
Good luck again.

COBettaCouple had a good post on how to move fishies with double breathable bags and such. I'll see if I can find it. Gimme a bit.
Edit: Found it!

Thanx so much. It makes me feel much better knowing that 19 out of his 21 fish survived. The only problem is that all those fish are small and mine are in the 20cm mark.

Bigger bags?
Just kidding. But for real, I hope it goes well. Perhaps COBettaCouple will stop by and share their wisdom. You might try a PM as well.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

We recently bought a hobbyist's fishroom that was a 7 hour drive away.
In this purchase were several, up to foot long, cichlids.
I would get as large a plastic container as was feasable for each fish, fill each 30% of the way with water and not worry about the air pumps or oxygen tabs.
We transfered this last batch with no losses.

Hey.. yea, moving fish is probably as stressful to us as them, but the same things we did for our fish will work with larger fish and as suggested, just needs bigger bags which can be found in the breathable bags too.
The main thing is to keep them from hitting themselves on hard things from water movement and to keep them calm

I agree w/ the ability to move them in bags, we bought some fish that were sent to us from NC in double bags and it took 2 days to get them to us, the fish were happy and healthy and colored up just perfect after shipping. (of coarse I just about killed the UPS driver when he pulled up to my house tossing the box around in his hands, my dog actually nipped his ankle where thought I was upset at that guy)
The bags were filled like Dino said w/ 30% water and the guy actually put one fish to a bag.

Thanx guys. That solves my fish problem. I can keep my equipment, filters ect... in a seperate container with water to keep it wet. What about my tanks? They will be dry for about five hrs, will I have to cycle again??

You shouldnt have too..as long as your filter media stays wet with current tank water..just keep an eye on things in case of a mini cycle...I hate moving specially with our fish babies
