New aquarists, advice needed.

My girlfriend and I recently bought a new tank and have lost a couple fish. After doing some research and finding highish nitrite levels a couple weeks ago, we decided to hold off on replacing the casualties for the time being until we learned more about what we got ourselves into. We have a total of 11 various fish (info in profile) and 4 inverts. Before we endanger any more fish, should we stop adding, and if we are overstocked, what can we do to keep our current inhabitants happy and healthy. Right now, they seem to be doing well after a bout with Ich a week ago. They are all active and seem to be just fine. Any advice for a couple beginning aquarists would be appreciated.

Hello Feanix
Welcome to fishlore. I would say that your tank is overstocked and I would not add anymore fish to that tank. Tetras and your tiger barb do better in schools. If you can give some thought to returning some of your fish, your tank would be better for it.
Your aquarium info says that you know about the nitrogen cycle. Looking at a reading of high nitrites I would say that your tank has not cycled yet. That is not good for your fish. You should be doing daily water changes to keep those toxins down while your tank is cycling. Water changes of at least 25% would be a good start and possibly removing some of those fish.
Good luck with your new hobby!

Here is something I always think about when stocking. the average size of the fish when fully grown. A fish might be small now but when he gets to be an adult he might need a larger home. I got a little almost 2 inch bristlenose pleco and I know he will get between 4 and about 5 inches. I probably about drove the woman in the fish dept. nuts but I had to make up my mind if I wanted otos in another tank or a pleco. In my 45 gallon now I have have a total of about 37 inches of fish when he gets to be an adult and feel the tank is stocked fully. Four of your fish will probably out grow the tank in a very short time if the water quality is good. Good luck on your tank, once you get the hang of it, it will be easy.
