Fishy Personalities
What kind of personalities do your fish have? I have, in my tank, 5 guppies, 6 tiger barbs, 1 Synodontis Petricola, and i just added a new fish (sorry I can't think of the exact name at this point but it is some sort algae eating pleco i believe)
Anyways my Petricola is named Bubba. I love Bubba but he likes to hide from me. During the day he hides from me and at night he hides as long as the tank light is on or if I am in the room. So at night I turn off the aquarium light (with all lights in the room off too) and he will come out. Then I will turn the light back on and he will swim away behind the filter to hide. But I noticed that he does not hide if I am not looking. I setup a webcam to watch the tank and noticed that he only hides when I am looking.. silly little fella.
Also one of my Tiger Barbs is larger than the other 5, this one is the only one that does not try to nip the guppies. instead this fish will chase off the other barbs and protect the guppies. it is truly remarkable.

Fish do have their own personalities, funny about the webcam.
I know this is but you should consider getting a larger tank for all those fish, you're pretty over stocked.
They'll really show their personalities then, I'm sure you'll be quite pleased.

Wow, that's cool! It's true, almost every fish have their own personality. Mostly Bettas! I hope your new tank will go great for your fish. Good luck!

Some fish species have MUCH more personality than others - Betta are one of the biggest personality punches out there, which is (Combined with their modest requirements in terms of tank size and beutiful colours and fins) why so many people catch the 'Betta addiction'.
Even if you did separate the Barbs - you'd be overstocked. Plecos need at least 100gal really, and 5 guppys need a 10gal.

Is your aquarium info incorrect or was a number left out?
5 Tiger barbs, guppies, pleco and synodontis in 5 gallons of water? That can't be the actual size....?
2 guppies are about all you could put in there.

You could post a pic in the Fish Id section of the forum, someone will be able to tell you what kind it is.
It's easy to get attched quickly, isn't it?

I agree about their own, "fishonal", way of being/behave.
Edda, the female Betta, is bossy, no doubts about it, but gets along with a school of 8 young restless Zebra Danios (4 of them Glowfish) former tankmates, and with her actual tankmates, a group of 1male+2female fancy guppies (of course she eats the fry). However, she became really nasty with six young (I mean really young, less than 1") Convict Cichlids, displaying the "typically aggressive" male Betta behaviour with them.
I'm still getting familiar with each Convict, but I can tell some differences within the school of Zebra Danios; some just don't mingle with the Convicts at all, and remain "packed", but two of the group tend to break from the school and "explore" around (whenever I move decoration, trimmer/rearrenge plants) and excersise in particular ways, like Elmo, the less-good-lucking -I won't say the word- of the males who copied Edda's behavior (former tankmate/boss) of swimming against the current from the output of the HOB, and "playing" with the internal water current, swimming forward (against current) and then slowly going in "reverse" to the other end, and repeat this several times.
On the other hand/tank, Moon, the young 5" Tiguer Oscar, a laid-back, unpredictable (goes from zero to fullspeed in a blink), easy-go-lucky character (wether he or she is impossible to tell, at least for me) interacts with all three African Cichlids (likely some hybrids of Kenyi) in a peaceful way (for the time being);
As for the African Cichlikds, the smallest one of them all, spends a lot of time literally hanging around (follows Moon and stays in the upper part of the tank around where Moon's at), or even next to (specially at night), as if felt protected by the Big Fish.
The largest of the African Cichlid (still too young to tell male from female, at least for me) owns the largest "cave" (a bridge ornament) and spends most of the time either inside or around it (kind of paranoid/hypervigilant that someone would take over). The other one, the mid-size (although they're all young, ranging from 1 to 2") is found just around everywhere in the tank, like either homeless or feeling at home anywhere, spending time here and there, although recently has claimed a corner (mostly for for the night) of sand only substrate surrounded by Hornwort and Anacharis (as dense as Moon allows it to be). I built/arranged for them a "slate-rock-cave" that everyone has ignored, go figure...

What size tank are you going to upgrade to for the fish, anyway? For the guppys and tiger barbs you'll need a 30gal - and that's with no room for anything else.
