I have had what I would describe as a mild case of blue green algae in my tank for a few weeks now. What I have been doing is wiping down the walls of the tank when I do my water changes and getting the particles out, as well as picking it off any decor I see it on. I know that when this gets to more severe cases, it will affect the fish in the tank (something, obviously, I want to avoid). So far, no signs of stress or lethargy, but I want to get this taken care of. It always keeps coming back, though it's not as bad as it once was. I have minimized the lighting in the tank the best I could, but it's next to a window so that sometimes becomes a challenge.

Do larger and more frequent water changes. Plants will help absorb extra nitrates, if you want some. I currently have four clusters of bronze crypt that are fighting a war with a very minor cyanobacteria outbreak, and they seem to be winning.

You may want to make a cardboard frame that surround three sides of the tank, blocking the sunlight out.

You can get a UV sterilizer. I have been told that that will take care of your problem. But as of now it is in the water and only water changes will get it out. I think. Maybe someone could add on to that?

I've had outbreaks of that algae too. I eventually beat it out but it took a lot of very thorough cleanings to finally get rid of it.. along with changing out some decor.

Sorry, I meant to say in my post:
You're on the right track. It just takes a lot of diligence. Cyanobacteria is tough stuff, and will resist a lot of cleaning, but as long as you keep at it, it will eventually disappear.

The first time I had the stuff, I had a really bad outbreak and just pulled my fish out, put him in my Q-tank, and then dosed the tank with Maracyn.
