Urgent Advice Needed Plec
Hi, I know very little about fish, I have a tropical fish tank, just found out that they are called freshwater! Anyway, we have a plec, and he is about 2 years old, about 6 inches long, our tank is 4 foot by 1foot and about 2 foot high, we have just inherited a plec from a friend, he is in a small amount of water and cooling down rapidly, what I need to know is can he live in our tank with our fish and our plec? I don't want them to fight or injur each other. Please help!

Welcome to FishLore!
What other fish do you have?
Plecos are usually pretty docile fish...

Is it a Common Pleco? Are they both? Having more than one Pleco of any sort means having plenty of "floor" space and hiding places for them to occupy to be happy. They can get territorial and claim "their" spot. Also, Common Pleco's can become quite large! Having 2 in your tank is probably a bad idea as they grow, but better than letting him/her die in a cup!
Do you know how big your tank is in liters/gallons? If not, get real measurements and we can figure it out for you.
You can find out mroe about Pleco's here.

I believe that his tank is probably around 60 US gallons or 50 UK gallons with the dimensions he listed.
2 common plecos would push limits with that.

Very much so. And because there might not be enough aquarium bottom to go around, you may see a bit of aggression from them as they grow larger. Again, this is assuming the tank is 60 US gallons and they are both Common Plecostomus's. If either are different (like Bristlenose Pleco), that's quite different.

Hi, thank you, my tank is exactly 4foot long x 1 foot wide, they are (I think) both common plecs, they both look the same any way. our plec does very little, usually looks dead, but obviously isn't! Will I be OK putting them together for just the night then if they will not live harmoniously together and I will take the new guy to the pet store tomorrow? Or do I have enough floor space for the two of them?
I don't want to upset either fish!!!

sorry, forgot to mention, we also have two albino sharks, five black widdow tetras, 6 albino tetras and one penguin tetra (his friends died and got eaten by our plec!) and one siamese fighting fish. Now like I say, I am not too well up on fish and could have their names wrong, we have had them all just over two years!

Thats 60 US gallons. Rather than let him die I would say put him in until you can give it away or get a bigger tank. If your original Plec is two years old and only six inches long I truly doubt it is a common plec. got pictures

Welcome to Fishlore.
You might want to look at the pictures at www.planetcatfish.com for the Plecos to help determine what type of plecos you're dealing with. Posting any pics that you have here will help as well.

Thank you for all the responses, I have had a look at the pictures and I am not too sure now about my Plec, the one we received yesterday I am certain is a common one, but mine does not seem to match any of the photos. Please help. Last night I had to put Colin (New guy) into our tank as I had no way of heating the small amount of water he came in, they had a bit of a tusstle but then left each other alone, this morning they are doing their own thing. I have taken some photos so if anyone can identify them properly for me that would be great.
I have attached the photos although I can't see them on this preview page, not sure I have done it correctly, the first photo CIMG0349 shows my plec (called Sucker) and the new guy on the glass, as you will notice, mine is more of a leopard print and is very black with green/yellow markings.
Photo CIMG0351 shows Colin the new guy.
Photo CIMG0355 shows the underside of Colin.

They look like nice Plecos! They actually grow big. I've seen one in an aquarium store in my country about as big as 2 A4 papers! lol Try getting a bigger tank for them.

The one in 2nd and 3rd pictures is a common but I can't ID the other one for sure. I will look on planetcatfish and try to find out though.
They should be alright for a while. But if you keep them in there permanently they will overload your tanks bioload.

Yours looks like an L153 or an L290.
L153 gets about 7 inches at adult size. Not sure of size on L290 but its not a commonly sold pleco so I doubt that is it.
Look up each one of those and see which one it looks like the most to you.
L153: http://planetcatfish.com/catelog/spe...species_id=893
L290: http://planetcatfish.com/catelog/spe...species_id=823
To me it looks like an L290 the most. But I am not sure how you would've gotten one unless you ordered it specifically.

Please don't put bettas in with tetras like Black Widows. The betta is very likely to be ripped to shreds.
