Finally
After 5 1/2 long weeks, my tank finally cycled!
I went out tonight and bought 3 Bosemans Rainbow Fish.
I had actually used 4 Danios to cycle my tank. (Found out about fishless cycling after putting the Danios in, else I would have gone fishless). One of the Danios died at the end of the ammonia portion of my cycle, so I have 3 left. They never really schooled. The fist would chase the second around, and the third kinda just kept outta the way and to himself.
It was funny, as soon as I put the much bigger Rainbows in, the three danios got into a little school and haven't separated since.
Also the Rainbows apparently weren't too happy about getting netted out of the bag. Their front halves turned really dark blue for a few minutes. They might not have been happy, but they sure looked pretty!

The danio tend to school, when tanked alone, when in groups of 5 or more. When you added the other fish it could've caused one of two common reactions that lead to the schooling:
1) They felt threatened and schooled for defense.
or
2) The rainbow fish and danio act as dither fish for one another. (If the danio see the rainbows out and swimming they assume all is alright, and vice versa.) We actually use dither fish in a few tanks.
You sound like things are going well.
(Don't forget to update your aquarium info in your tab, so people don't try to school you, in the future, on the cycle of the tank that has fish in it. )

Congratulations! If you can, attach a picture so we (meaning I) can enjoy your Rainbows from the distance.
One question for you: how long 'til your next tank(s)?

I'm pretty sure the Danios are feeling threatened, so they suddenly feel the need to hang together...you know, strength in numbers.
There's nothing like a percieved threat to bring individuals together.

I'll see what I can do about dusting off the camera.
Although I would love more tanks, I really wouldn't have the time to take care of any more than what I have now. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

HaHa, this is so true, especially when the next great fish you see isn't compatible with the ones you have.
Congrats on the cycling, John! The tank will be far less work for you now...just weekly maintenance.
Good luck and go dust off that camera.

PS Let us know when (if is out of the question, at least for Lucy, Eve, and me) and whereabouts your next tank(s).
(I do change my mind despite my own convictions some times, as long as it is for my well being). Now, seriously, I respect your position, I'm just kidding around.
