Tank Sterilization

"Yea, after we lose a fish to any disease or illness, the tank and everything in it gets sterilized completely."

This was posted in another thread. God forbid this happens, but if we lose fish to disease how do we sterilize a tank? I mean, we shouldn't use detergents, chlorine, soap, and boiling a whole aquarium seems rather awkward.

I think it would depend on what disease it is... if it is from something that could spread, just keep treating the tank for a week or two for the disease...

if you are going to tear down the tank you CAN you bleach. rinse very well. and for the last rinse use dechlorinated water..I use double what it says on the bottle. For cleaning I use the cheap stuff.

9Most recommend using 1 part bleach to 19 parts water for cleaning...then after a good scrubin, rinse in hot water and as others said, treat tap water with prime or whatever you choose for water conditioner

I've also heard of a water & vinegar mix to use in sterilizing tanks. If I can, I like to let a tank be stored dry for at least 3 weeks after sterilizing it. Then a 2nd sterilization and it's ready to set up to use again.
