From goldfish to tropical

For a while I've had a couple of goldfish in a tiny tank, probably your stereotypical goldfish bowl nightmare.

I'm now moving to a 60 litre tropical tank, which I will be taking a lot more seriously, having done a lot more research this time.

Anyway, my question is, what do I do with my old goldfish? I have 2 options.

The obvious one is to give them to my mother in law who will put them in her pond which has lots of other similar fish.

The second option is to keep them in the tropical tank. I assumed that I couldn't do this, but now I'm not so sure. Can goldfish go in tropical tanks? Can they go in while the tank is still cycling? Can they live with neon and cardinal tetras (they are tiny, 2") ? I'm guessing the answer is no, but it's best to ask. I've grown quite attached to these fish, and would rather they lived with me rather than only seeing them at weekends.

welcome to fishlore!!!

goldfish cant be kept in a tropical tank...well at least and be totally happy they cant..they like cooler temps...no fish should go into a tank when its still cycleing...it could kill them..and goldfish might also have a neon or two for a snack so best not to keep them with small fish ..

goodluck on whatever you decide

That's what I thought. Time for them to go outside. They'll probably appreciate the space and company they'll get in a pond anyway.

My Grandfather keeps a pond with (mainly) Goldfish in his back yard. They love it. They stay all year, even through the winter, where it can get very cold. They say that as long as the water doesn't freeze through, they're usually good. Hardy fish, for sure!

Yeah - let those goldies stretch their fins in a pond! A 60L would be to small for them anyway.

Be aware that 60litres is small. A small school of 6 neons would take up 2 3rds of your fish space. I say, 6 Neons and 3 Male Guppys. Gups are beautiful fish, really hardy and there are so many variety's. Just make sure you get only males - these fish breed like rabbits! It's easy to tell though. I'll try give you a pic off paint... You have to look at the anal fin. (The paint pic didn't work, sorry!) The male's is long and tubular, the female's looks just like a triangular fin.
