I'm giving away my age, but I saw the animated version of Charlotte's Web back in the '70's as well as the live action version from a couple of years ago.
I also read the book when I was a kid.

I am actually troubled by America's duality regarding eating animals.
Dennis Leary has it right when he says we only want to save the cute animals.
However, I definitely wouldn't want to eat a fish that had just died in a tank. It's not the chemicals. In my opinion, if it's good enough for my pets, it had better be good enough for me. It's the fact that a fish that died early has died for a reason, as was said early in the thread, while a fish that died of old age is likely to have its own problems.

lol This wins my "Amanda's Favorite Thread of the Week"... I love that we are exploring every aspect of this.
Joe, feel free to pipe back up here!!
MY impression is that he wasn't literally planning on getting some pets and (especially and specifically an oscar or jack d) and raising them as pets and then eating them! I feel like he was just asking if it's possible.
thank you i was just wondering if it was possible i love my fish but then again it wouldnt be a bad idea looking at how the economy is going own the drain u could have a good supply of fish sticks in your tank LOL

That whole bad economy thing is why we should all learn how to raise gardens, and our men learn how to hunt... (well at least I know we will be eating in our house)

Why just men?
Hunting is no longer a viable method of sustaining a population. We've grown larger than the world can sustain in this way. That's why we have to "cheat" nature by farming, which allows us to carefully control conditions and grow more prey animals than a given area would normally be capable of supporting.
I do garden. I only have a few veggies growing right now, but I plan to expand this each year until I can make it a summer without needing to buy veggies.

I confess, as a kid, I did eat a pig that I had played with and had a name.
It wasn't until after we had eaten that I found out though.

I hope the economy doesn't get so bad that we have to eat our pets. If so, I'm getting a pet buffalo.

People talks about the bad economy, and I won't go too far being that it is kinda a side-track, but the economy ain't really that bad right now. It is still growing, just a bit slower than in previous years. It'll turn around just fine.
I am all for eatting animals and I even plan to in the next year or two get a chicken coop built and stock it with laying and roosting hens. The eggs will be eatten and hopefully the chickens will multiply enough to have home-grown rotisserie chickens each year. I wouldn't mind learning to hunt for meat also, and honestly, if our neighbors hadn't dammed up the creek that fed into our pond (causing it to dry out) we would have it stocked with fish that we could catch anytime we wanted them for dinner.. Animals, in my opinion, are part of the food chain and if I am hungry then I go to the food chain for sustinance (whether that be veggies or animals.)
As my point seems to have been understood I will leave it with just repeating, "As long as the animal is slaughtered while showing no signs of illness I would probably atleast try to consume it."

AND I am getting a farm and stalking up on cows, pigs & chickens. Or setting up a cold SW water tank with cod, haddock scallops and lobster.

I will say this, for one time in my life its a good thing to be a redneck from the woods... I grew up in WV, fishing/hunting was something my dad taught me and I enjoyied. I also helped in the garden. My husbands family owns a good country block here in TN and there are a bunch of cattle on it, and 2 giant gardens, the garden food always puts out enough to can/freeze for another year, in fact I have used corn for 2 years. (thank goodness the corn from the year before last put out good, last year we actually still had corn)
I have no problem w/ killing any of the cattle in the feild and eating it (especially the angus!! can we say ribeye? lol) after I broke my ankle when they got out of their fence a year ago, thanks to the big angus bull out in the feild hes on my dinner list and has been for a while. He also charged at my husband that day.
Kill my cat for food? no fish? no.. I couldn't eat my pets...
unless my pets say oink, moo, or cockadoodledo...

If I was snow bound to my house and ran out of food fried fish would be on the menu an oscar hand fed shrimp and crawfish and never had a hard day in it's life would prob be very tasty with a little garlic and dill....
But then again in this case I would go down the list and the cat and dog would follow....
but on the norm I dont see a reason why you couldn't eat your fish. Cooking them would kill the bacteria.
The chemicals we put in our tenk are most likely better then the stuff we dump into rivers and streams.
So I say go for it and let us know how they taste.
As a kid my uncle had a pet pig porky and I was very upset when i found out who was the main guest for dinner at the pig roast.. I almost didn't finish my pulled pork sandwich
