Heating the aquarium

Hey guys im a newbie aquarist! im im just wondering how long it should take to heat up a 4ft aquarium i think its about 50 gallons. or better yet wat is a good way to heat up an aquarium quickly. Im using a 300 wat heater and its going pretty slow lol. don't know how it works yet. still yet to put fish in it (and cycle it). thanks!

I imagine a 4ft would take awhile to heat. My 2ft took a good few hours so just double that. The best part of the day possibly. If you havent cycled it yet then it should be well and truly heated by the time you have cycled it and are ready to put fish in. If it isnt by that time then you might have a problem.

welcome to fishlore remember to cycle your tank fish-less. do you have a thermometer for the tank,at the right temp it will still feel a bit cool to the touch. what fish are you thinking of putting in. can you post any pics?. there are alot of people here that know alot so just ask and i'm sure they will help.

Hi robby
You can pick the aussies by the way we describe our tanks , 2ft 3ft 4ft.. lol
To help heat it , just use warm dechlorinated water . You will need to let it sit while the heater soughts itself and then make the adjustments to fine tune your temp .
Hope this helps

Yes a 4ft tank would take a while to heat up. You can use an aquarium thermometer to check if the temperature is ok. Oh and be sure to perform the aquarium cycle first before adding fish! Here's a link:

Good luck!

Welcome to Fishlore.

If you're cycling your tank fishless, go ahead and run the heater on maximum. The warmer water will help the good bacteria colonies in reproducing. Just remember to turn it back down a few days before adding fish.
