Flower Pot Question

Well...I'm thinking about keeping a Betta in a flower pot. PetSmart told me they could live in mud puddles, so I think that if I change the water once a week they'll be in paradise. I think two males might be nice, what do you think?

I kid, I kid (I can see the Betta parents wanting the )

Anyways, my real question is, what type of flower pots are okay for aquarium use? Just your standard clay pot? Or is there something more specific? Thanks,

Cory

I started reading this and thought, omg, he knows better, what is he thinking! lol

I'll be interested to see what the others say about this, I've got a tiny one I'd like to add to my tetra tank.

Standard clays are great, as well as standard clay figurines..they make all kinds.. and I have a flower pot I got from the dollar store...it has girlie flowers on it as you can see, but the SAE's love it and the angels play hide n seek with it...I boiled it for 20 min, cooled it down, then have had it in my tank for a few months...

Unglazed terra cotta pots are excellent for aquarium use. Many long time members have used them with no problem. Most glazes are fine, but if a glaze has shiny metallic colors in it, it's because it has a large quantity of metals in it, and these could leech into the water.

I recently put a clay flower pot into my 10G (bought from the dollar store for 75c - a real bargain)

I immersed it in a bucket of warm water treated with prime (just in case) then rubbed aquarium salt thoroughly over it to cleanse it of anything that may have been on it, then rinsed thoroughly.

I have it on one side of my tank (on its side) and threaded the air hose through the drainage hole and put the little blue bubble thingy back on - hope that makes sense.

I originally put it in there for my betta to hide out in but he never went anywhere near it so I decided to turn it into a bubble cave of sorts and now he likes playing in the bubbles that come out of it - go figure!

Hi konaboy
I use unglazed terracotta pots ( axolotl tank ) and have had no ill affects.
Its worth looking for damaged or cracked ones as the store will often discount these just to get rid of them. You should be able to file them to make it smooth or bury the damage in the substrate to hide it.
Hope this helps

I have a cracked on sitting on its side in my planted 36. The fish never go near it but I have my DIY CO2 line going through it right now.

You can put clay pots IN your fish tank. But you can not use a flower pot AS an aquarium.

I don't know... I think you might be able to fit three males in the pot. You know, so they don't get lonely.

Seriously though, plain terra cotta pots are good to add to tanks. I bought a couple 3" ones from walmart for 38 cents each. Mic loves his and I also have one in my community tank that the minnows like to play in. I just boiled them and let them cool before adding them to the tank.

Plain, unglazed terra cotta pots are great. If you want to go through the effort you can flip one upside down and put holes in it. but normally you just put them on their side and the work fine. Also if you ahve plecos you can use the deeper bottoms to the pots(catches water from over watered plants not sure of tech term) Break a little hole in it, Sand it down, and you have a perfect cave.

Did I say something wrong, other than my spelling of the word one?
