starting my tank....

i have already had one post about fish....now im starting to feel edgy about starting my tank as i want to do everything correct!! so please bare with me.

so my tank arrives in about 15 mins.....i am going to boil everything before it goes in (of course im not talking about the fish here) and give the tank a wipe down with water only.

il declorinate the water and fill up my tank....then what do i do? whats the best way to start off the nitrogen cycle? im going to buy a watertesting kit later so i will take readings every other day then i presume when the readings are up to the standards of what fish i want to put in there i can go ahead and purchase them?

i have had a tank before but only a small one years ago so im just refreshing. also this hoover thing to clean the gravel with is confusing me?!

oh one other thing when it comes to doing a water change on the tank do i just fill up a few buckets using slightly warm water to match the tank temp and then declorinate before adding to the tank?

thanks alot capekate!

i asked the guy in charge at the local aquarium specialist shop and the instructions he gave me were to do my tank add the de-chlorinator let the waterstand for a few days then start adding my fish so i take it he was trying to encourage me to start the cycle with fish! i just want to double check everything i do so i do have any casualties.

thanks again!

Hi loudini Welcome to Fish Lore

That's what is sounds like to me too. I'm glad you want to cycle fish less. It's less work and results in happier fish.

Here's a good article about getting the cycle:

Good Luck.

You will find that most fish stores are in the business of selling fish. We have all had bad advice from fish stores in regard to when you can add fish.
You will really need to cycle your tank first.. get the proper readings, which are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and nitrates between 10-20 before it is safe to add fish. Best way to cycle a tank is fishless. You can either add pure ammonia to the tank water and let that start your nitrogen cycle. Or you can 'feed' your tank with a tiny piece of raw fish/ shrimp or use fish food. This will eventually turn to ammonia which will get your cycle started.
A test kit used as a measure of when your tank is truly cycled is a good idea.
There is more threads on the nitrogen cycle.. and cycling your tank fishless as well. I will pull those up for you.
Normally it takes anywhere from three to six weeks for a tank to cycle.
One of the best reasons I found for cycling a tank w/o fish were number one, no stress on the fish or loss of fish due to toxins in the uncycled tank, but also, you will not have to do any water changes til after the tank has cycled and just before adding fish. With fish, you would have to do at least a 30-50% water change daily to keep the ammonia, nitrites down.. which in turn just slows the cycle, but necessary if using fish to cycle your tank.
Of course, if you can find the product Bio Spira, and use that, your tank will be ready for fish immediately!

FYI... I'm using a gravel vacuum that is started by a small hand pump. It works great, even for a 1 gallon tank.
