I purchased 2 blue dwarf gouramis a couple of days ago and I think one has developed ich. There are no signs of this in my other fish.
Since I have a community tank, I am wondering of the best method of treatment for the whole tank. I have gouramis, corys, neon tetras, guppies and glass cats.
I am thinking of increasing the temperature to 28C (it's currently 25C), and am not sure what medication would be best.
I have tried to take 50 pictures of the fish so far to show the ich, and the attached is the best I could do! If you enlarge the pic you might be able to see some white dots on the tail. I can also see a few white dots on the body and other fins.
Ich will look like little salt crystals. If that's what you're seeing, then 2 weeks of the water temp being 28-29C is the treatment. Do daily water changes of about 25% and clean the substrate at least once a week. No meds are needed.
I did a mass water change 3 days ago, raised the temperature to 29C and added 5ml of Interpet Anti White Spot.
I am due to add the second dose tomorrow.
Should I also be doing water changes in between this? The leaflet on the medication says "the product remains active for several days", so I didn't think I should change the water if the medication is still working. On the other hand, I thought I should be doing a water change to get rid of any loose parasites in the water.
It's better to not use meds, particularly if malachite green (victoria green) is an ingredient. Daily water changes do more than meds, but the warmer water is what does most of the work.
