oily surface??

my tank is 3 weeks old not dure if it is cycled prop yet cause im to cheap to get a test kit, the tank has had 4 happy zebra danios and a pleco the thing thats buggin me is that there is this oil like layer on the surface,
any ideas??

other thing is my angle (who is now out of the tank) started to get pop-eye whilst being in the tank for 3 days could this be because tank is not cycled or just a injury?? as i said the zebra danios and pleco are having no problems.

im sure at 3 weeks old, its not cycled yet and angels are very sensitive to water parimeters...dr fosters and smiths site on here is very reasonable for test kits....its a must for every tank owner...id be doing 50% water changes everyday until you know for sure that your are cycled...otherwise, your other fish will show signs of ammonia ...the oily surface is a sure sign that somethings in the water and needs to be changed...goodluck!

Do you have either mopani/drift/bog wood in the tank?

If you do that may be the cause for the oily looking surface, I nhad the same problem but after a few water changes it went away

You'll really need a test kit to tell what's going on with your water and your angel. You could be looking at a bacterial bloom and pop-eye can be caused by bad water conditions. The Angel needs to be treated in a quarantine/hospital tank with Triple Sulfa and I would recommend daily water changes of 25-40% on the tank that the fish are in now. Use Prime as your water conditioner to help the fish out, especially while the tank is uncycled.

Popeye is often a sign of poor water quality. As Shawnie said, angels are very sensitive to toxins in the water and yours may not survive unless you find out exactly where your tank is in the cycle and take appropriate action.

I know it's no fun spending money on test kits, but they last a long time not buying one may prove to be a false economy if fish die or need medications.

The oily stuff on the surface is just a protein film. Unsightly, but not harmful. Increasing aeration usually gets rid of it
