Power Problem

Today our energy company had to to the power off for a while. When my mom came in she said that she saw lots of my fish gasping at the surface, so she called my dad. He went to Petsmart, and the person there said that they were suffering from oxygen depletion, from it being out for 4 hours...
My dad bought me a battery powered airstone...
Now the power is back, but I have some questions before it goes off again tomorrow...
Was what actually happened oxygen depletion? Why would that happen now?
What should I do to get ready for tomorrow?
Should I do anything for the fish now?

hello

besides oxygen deprevation, ammonia poisoning causes the same thing. maybe because the filters were off, the ammonia was building up.

i would keep the airstone on tomorrow, and tonight do a waterchange so the water is low in nitrates

good luck!

The filtration does help with oxygen levels in the water. The battery powered airstone should help some with it. You could also try treating the tank with Prime in the morning, just to help with any potential water toxins.

For now, I think the best thing would be a 25% water change after a power outtage.
