I think everyone was too focused on the betta to realize how many types of fish there are from Asia!

The reason that most were focused on bettas is that there are very few fish that will do well in a 10g. Harlequins, for example, need a 20g tank (and at least six of them, as they are a schooling fish).
The dwarf guorami, however, is a decent idea.
A couple of white cloud mountain minnows might be a good addition for the guorami. They prefer being in groups, but aren't proper schooling fish like harlequins, so they aren't as likely to be stressed.
This is the problem that we have pretty much every time one of us tries to think of a stocking plan for a 10g tank. So many fish need a lot of friends.
