Advice on converting a saltwater tank to fresh

Hi,

I have very recently been given a 4x2' tank by a friend who keeps tropical marine fish.

It came with some gravel in it and a filter. All of this has been used for saltwater. I know it may be obvious, but can I reuse the filter for freshwater to save me some cash or is this a very bad thing?

I know nothing about fishkeeping so far, but am avidly reading any article I can get my hands on, especially on fishlore which is excellent.

Thanks
Dave

Welcome to Fishlore.

I think that if you give it a good cleaning out, that you can use it for freshwater.

Yes, you can convert the tank..Just drain it all the way, clean it really good fill it up and clycle it...My 55 gallon fresh water was a salt tank for 4 years...Now I have my Betta boy Will in it..

Good luck and Welcome to fishlore...

Hi,

Thanks for your advice and your welcomes. I think that I will replcae the filter media though ans start with fresh with the new one, but its good I don't need a new filter just yet
