is it common for different species to "play" together?

I have some fish that really enjoy playing with the other species in the tank, and was just wondering if this is common? I have a colored skirt tetra (purchased before i knew they were dyed) and it thinks its a silver dollar and schools with them, leaving the other three tetras alone. I also have a twig catfish that likes to play with my rubber nosed pleco.

i used to have a cory cat that would 'ride' around on the back of my cerulean worm. was pretty cool. but yeah, i don't think it's uncommon, especially when there is a limited number or their own species around.

I have a kissing fish that hangs with my silver dollar fish. Kinda odd to see but they hang out rather well together and seem to all enjoy each others company.

I had a red eye tetra who would sometimes ditch the other tetras to hang out with my rosy barbs. The rosy barbs pretty much ignored him though, poor guy! He eventually gave up and stayed with the tetras.

When I had an angelfish die, my remaining angelfish was lonely and kept trying to hang out with my pleco. The pleco would be sucking on the glass, staying in one spot, and my angelfish would just hover next to him. Then, once the pleco started sliding across the glass, my angelfish would get all excited and swim alongside him. It was so sad! Once I got another angelfish though, all was well again.

I got incredably lucky about a week ago and found 6 Siamese Algae Eaters at an LFS and bought them to go with the one I already had. I knew if they were true SAE's they would schoal together, which they do quite well. But something I totally didn't expect is that my Oto's, which look somewhat like small angular SAE's, will schoal with them and Vice Versa. I thought I was losing it when I first counted 10 SAE's cleaning the Java moss, but new I should only have 7. Then I realized 3 were Oto's along for the feeding session. So even though they are from totally oposite parts of the world, they seem not only totally compatible, but close enough to be schoal-mates (if there is such a term).

When I had just 2 ottos, I noticed they'd follow around with my corys or even my danios. I added a 3rd one a few weeks ago and 3 must be company for them because now they seem to just ignore the other fish.

I find most of my fish interact (And even hang out) with one another. All species of hatchets treat other species of hatchet as their own species, so it is possible to achieve a diverse group of top dwelling delights. It's one of he great joys of owning an aquarium - watching different species develop relationships and interact with each other. I used to have a black molly who was best buddys with a platy, and the same platy was great friends of a Bronze cory - she followed cory as cory stirred up detritus - hoping for food!

I have two Harlequin Rasboras that school with 4 Zebra Danios. Occasionally, one of my Otos joins this little bad as well.

Haha. I have a male guppy that hangs out with my neons. I figure since I put them in at the same time, the male guppy thought he was a neon xD

Our last little platy (he's only about 1" long and from a female that came home pregnant & all her fry were sickly) was too scared to come out of the plants in the 30g tank so I moved him to the tank with the Endlers and now he's one of the gang and I think he's happy to finally have fish his size again after his little platy buddy died last month.
