Help!!!!!!!

I just walked into my room and I noticed the tempurature of my tank was 90 degrees. One of my cherry barbs can't move but is still alive. I just put a couple of ice cubes in the tank. I think the heater just kept heating and didn't turn off.

First, make sure you turn the heater off!!!! Is the temp going down? You might have to run out and get a new heater! Good Luck

It happens. I lost a betta to this.
Get the temp down (but not too far) and get a new heater. I would never trust a heater that has gone overboard once.

The temp did go down. I did a 25% water change and put a few more ice cubes in, it's down to 85 degrees. The cherry barb did die.

Also, the first thing i did was turn the heater off, getting a new heater will have to wait until tomarrow. How many volts should a heater be for a 12 gallon tank.

I'm going to get a 100 watt visi-term heater, in the reviews it has people who say it has working perfectly for 8 years. for now i'm not worried about the temp being low it has been hot here recently.

No higher than a 50 watt and one that lets YOU control it! Check it before you head to bed. If it is down to low 80's and you don't exspect your room temp. to get too cold, I wouldn't do anything else till you get the heater.
When you are doing everything to get the temp. down, turning off the heater is sometimes not the first thing you think about.
Sorry for the loss of your fish

Wow, sorry about your fish and heater. What a shock that must have been for you.
How are your other fish?

So sorry about your fish. I think this is something that's happened to all of us.

Agree you should use no more than 50 watts in that tank. 100 watts is really overkill.

We're sorry that you lost your fish to a heater malfunction. We've had it happen with 2 Visi-Therm Deluxe heaters (lost some Mahachai Betta fry the first time and almost lost Stacy's favorite Betta the second time) and with one of those Tetra heaters (lost a tank of baby albino BN plecos to water way over 100.

I'd recommend the Visi-Therm Stealth or a Jager heater:

Thats good to hear BoSoxFan
My heater also malfunctioned once and I lost about ten cardinal tetras in one fell swoop. It was a shame. But it happens.
Glad to hear that you got control of the issue and all is well with your other fish!

Guess I'm luck for not having a heater breakdown on me, yet. I'll definitely be on guard if anything happens. I just got a 150w hydor theo for mine. It keeps the temps at a very good level.
