NEW 29 gal Tank - The old question, glass vs acrylic.

Hello to all,

Im no stranger to fish tanks, have had a few. But I will always have questions. Right now Ive got a Marineland 12g stock with 21 fish, danios, white skirt tetras, cories, kuli loaches, cherry & albino barbs. Surprising everyone is doing well. I have one of those long air wands.and of course the 3 stage filtration in the hood. I want to upgrade to a 29 gallon tank, thought I had my mind made up for acrylic again. But Ive got this nagging question in the back of my head and it wont shut up. Over the years, Ive had some plastic plants & little cave type decorations break apart after being in water for x-amount of years. Here is my question: Is it possible for an acrylic tank to break up or crack after years of having water in them Im getting cold feet. My 12 gallon Acrylic is 4 years old and looks great.

Im hoping someone can guide me in my thinking and have an answer for me.

Thanks very much and have a great Sunday. Mac

Scratching is a much bigger concern than breaking, IMO. Barring a pretty hard impact, or improper support on the bottom of the tank, an acrylic tank is not likely to break. I have a friend who had an acrylic tank when we were in college in the early '90s. It is still in use today.

AS sgould says scratching is a problem, and yellowing.....They just don't retain their resale value, but if you don't mind the "couldy" appearance....

I have never gotten one, and prefer glass.

I like glass and acrylic tanks and think the acrylic tanks would last as long as a glass tanks probably.
