A nice, cozy fish tank.

~Hello all!
I have this 5.5 gallon tank. I gave it about 10 pounds of nice, natural gravel. A couple nice Cabombas and two Madagascar Lace plants (fake of course) (I'll put a pic of it up soon). I also have a filter and heater powerful enough for up to a 30 gallon tank. I have a old 30 gallon tank which I just bought. It is going to be my long term project and sooner or later my pride and joy. The 5.5 gallon is just to get me by and keep me happ in the mean time.

Question is... Could I put five neons tetra in the 5.5? I know that the rule is at least one gallon per one inch, but they are so skinny small anyway, wouldn't they be fine? The ammonia lvl should be fine anyway with the big filter and I plan on changing the water half way every week.

What do you guys think?

If your 5.5 has completed the Nitrogen Cycle then you can probably have 3 Neons. But you have to start cycling your 30 immediately!

WELCOME TO OUR FISH FORUM...(fellow Michigander) The 5.5 should have 3 neons...they do grow after all. If you are going to start the 30g tank into cycling right away, then you could move the neons into that tank, and probably would hurt to have 5 neons in the small tank for 2 weeks.
Remember, that fish per gallon rule is one guideline, but the amount of gravel, plants and any other decor in the tank also subtracts from the useable water area for the fish.

Hi!

The minimum tank size for neons is 10gal, so no, no neons. If you can find ember tetras, you can have 6 of them. Pygmy (Sparkling) gouramis, a Betta, a Dwarf puffer or shrimp would work in there.

The rule of thumb was designed for tetra-type fish.
