Guppies, Oto's, Angels?
We bought 4 guppies tonight to start our 29g tank off. In a few weeks I'm going to be gettin some Oto's. I know they need to be in schools of 6+, should I buy 6 at a time or add them 2 at a time? After the tank adjusts with the Oto's, I wondered about adding an Angel to the mix? That'd put me around 29-30" of fish when they are fully grown, by which time I KNOW! LOL we will have more tanks setup (I'm really dying for a 120+ tank now!!)
Would these 3 get a long well together? If the Angel would not fit with the other 2 species, is there any other medium size fish that is pretty and peaceful?
thanks!

You can add 3 Otos at a time, but they're pretty sensitive to water conditions so after the quarantine period, acclimate them really gradual.
Guppies wouldn't be a good combo with Angels I think - Tetras tend to do better as Angels tankmates.

Hi!
I say get 6 otos at once, and quarantine them for a month in the 10gal feeding them a lot of live food to build up their strength before adding them to the main tank. Is it cycled? I sure hope it is!

Very good advice Otos are super sensitive to new tanks.
Angels while swimming all over the tank tend to be in the top third of the tank most of the time, so something that swims in the middle region or likes the bottom would be a good selection. If you add everything but the angels first then a few days later add the angels you will avoid any aggression the angels would have displayed over territory claimed.

The Oto's wouldn't be added for at least 5 weeks. The guppies are assisting with the cycling process right now, and are doing wonderfully. The 29g tank is looking good as far as the API test kit is concerned. I'll be doing a 25% water change tomorrow. BIO-SPARA was not an option as out of the 8 LFS's in town, no one carries it or orders it, and wasn't paying 40$+ via the web for it. One LFS who I've been visiting for various pet needs, for the last 8 years, did indeed talk me in to using Cycle. The owner is a friend from when I worked at the vet, and she has had great success with it. Trick she says is to use it heavier than as directed - every 2-3 days rather than once a week, and maintain that treatment for 2-3 weeks, backing to once thereafter. Hopefully it works for me as well. I definitely will keep folks posted as to whether I have success or not with it.
Again, I have no plans to ad any more fish for at least 5 weeks, so we should definitely be looking at a cycled tank by then!
Will be keeping the guppies I'm sure. They have funny, quirky little personalities, and since we got them in the tank, in the last 12 hours the females have really started to shine. One has a bright neon yellow tail fin, another has a blue/purple. They look gorgeous.
Since an Angel would likely not be a good candidate to go with the guppies, any other recommendations? Maybe 2 Corys or Gouramis?

Hi!
Pearl gouramis are a little smaller than Angels, and beautiful. 2 females would work well.

Gourami are great fish, but Guppies have a habit of nipping at those long feelers.

I have kept guppies with every gourami I ever had at one point or another and never had any problem

Hi!
Not in my books... I have a Guppy with my gouramis and he leaves everybody alone. I have never seen any sign of aggresion in my tank - even my male cherry barb leaves the females alone! (Well, he used to chase them about twice... )

Ok, so at this point I've changed my mind again Looking at a selection of Corys rather than Otos now. Now I just need to decide what I want to do in regards to fitting in something similar to gouramis/angels in there

I would do the 2 female laces. they are more compatible than angels.

Hi!
He means Pearl gouramis. However, no gouramis are compatible with angels - it's one or the other or a tank divider.

Yes, I think we decided that Angels were definitely out. Right now Gouramis are a possible replacement.. but the larger fish will be the last ones we add. Next will be the corys (or maybe otos) but I found a LFS that deals heavily in corys and claims to have 11 different varieties in stock. They've been around for 15+ years and are locally owned, so assuming they are going to be good stock. Plan on stopping by there sometime this week.
