Noob requires help to set up a new tank

Hi All

Help much needed, we have recently purchased a new small UK 30 litre corner tank (tank model: Aqua UFO 350), which has undergravel filter, and also light and heater, we would like to set it up for freshwater tropical.

We really need some help as we know its a small starter tank, but what sort of fish could we start off with and how many, also what would be the best plants and how many.
We really want to get this right, so that later on we can advance and get a larger tank.

I have had so much mixed response from friends who have fish tanks, and its now starting to get really confusing.

Because it is an under gravel filter, we were also give with the tank some quite course gravel to stop it clogging.

Look forward to hearing from you.

That is a little more than 7 US gallons, pretty small. I would say..

Option 1
Trio of Endlers livebearers

Option 2
1 Dwarf puffer

Option 3
1 betta

I agree with angelfish. Its a small tank and I would not put too many fish in there. Since you are starting off, maybe a hardy betta fish would be the best bet?

Hi!

First off, read about the nitrogen cycle: http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm This is a vital part of fishkeeping, and after that it's very easy.

Angelfish220 has got you covered for fish stocking ideas. You could also start a Red cherry shrimp colony if you wanted in there, or have a pair of African Dwarf frogs. I'd go for a Betta, though.

Nar - many Bettas won't accept a Ghost shrimp into their territroy and eat it.

Hi, Jennyandpeter, WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

The first suggestion is to thoroughly read the articles here on fishlore on setting up a tank for beginners, and the Nitrogen Cycle. These are all links at the top of this page in the blue bar under the word "ARTICLE"........

You need to have your tank cycled BEFORE you add fish.

Any time you add live bearers to a small tank, it will quickly get overcrowded! So, my advice is to get a Betta. They have tons of personality, and will be very happy in a 7 gal tank!

I'm not familiar with your exact tank set-up, but you should consider an internal filter like an Eheim 2206 or 2208. They are rated for a tank your size up to about 15 gallons. I like UGF, but would NEVER have it as my only filter system.

After you have kept this tank successfully for 6 months, you will be happy to buy a bigger tank, the larger the tank the easier it is to have a trouble free experience.

The best way I know to have a happy experience with a fish tank is to reasearch everything BEFORE you start with fish. Fishlore is a very good place to start! Please feel free to ask any question, we will try to help!

Welcome to Fishlore.

That tank could hold about 7.5" of fish (using their adult sizes), so a trio of Guppies or Corys would work, or a Betta, or a cherry shrimp colony, or a group of Endlers.

Just cycle the tank first, so that the fish that you buy will be healthy.

Hope you get that tank cycled, be sure to get a water test kit to help you track progress of the tank.
