question about lighting

I was wondering how fish stand on light and darkness. I've got my tank set-up in my living room and i'm up all night with the lights on. not on in the tank, just living room light light in other room so my tank isn't dark dark at nighttime. I was wondering if it's crucial that i should be covering my tank at night so my fish can rest better or if i'm worrying for nothing.

I'm asking this mainly cause i'm worried maybe my puffers aren't getting their rest due to there being to much light at night or if it doesn't make a difference.

thanks

If your tank has plants and hiding spaces, they'll go in them to get some sleep.

Having the light from another room won't hurt as long as the light doesn't directly shine into the tank else they'll soon be asking you if nightime ever comes around

I'm sitting here (almost 4am ), my 30g is behind me and I have one of the room lights on at the other end of the room and the fish are sleeping.

well my puffer is resting behind a rock at the front of my tank, there's living room light in that left side of the tank. i'm guessing that if i think there is to much light, there must be to much light. the light doesn't directly shine into the tank but with the windows and everything it's definately in the tank

Fish need a dark night cycle. They can't close their eyes.

if your fish shows any signs of stress anytime soon then just turn that light off at night.

i can't really turn the light off, so i guess i'l cover the tank with a blanket at night
